6ix9ine, who faced a minimum sentence of 37 years in prison, was ultimately sentenced to 24 months in jail, thanks to his cooperation in the FBI investigation which you can read more about in this article.
The cooperation provided by Daniel Hernandez in the FBI investigation against the Nine Trey Bloods gang in New York has been crucial in allowing him to benefit from this drastic reduction in his sentence.
If we subtract the thirteen months Tekashi has already spent behind bars from his two-year prison sentence, the news is that Six Nine could be free as early as November. But there's more.
Today in XXLMag we read a fascinating account from 6ix9ine's lawyer, Lance Lazzaro, who claims the rapper will be released from prison in August. Why? Very simple: because of the 85% rule.
What is the 85% rule that will set 6ix9ine free?
It's very simple. In the United States, every prisoner is required to serve at least 85% of their sentence before being eligible for any kind of early release. In 6ix9ine's case, this would mean his immediate release. While the rule isn't always applied (good behavior is essential for the prisoner), yesterday his lawyer assumed the rapper would be released early.
“We’re a little disappointed,” Tekashi’s lawyer commented yesterday as he left the courthouse. “We were hoping the government’s recommendation to release him based on his time served would be followed, but it was up to the judge.” He continued, “Daniel will have to serve another seven months and twelve days because the time he’s already served counts toward his sentence. He knows he’ll be able to go home in August and focus on rebuilding his career and relationships.”
