Virgin of the Assumption

Meaning and Belief in the Virgin of the Assumption

The belief that the Virgin Mary mother of Jesus Christ was taken body and soul to heaven when her life ended here on earth, is a tradition and doctrine of the Catholic, Orthodox, Eastern Orthodox churches and even some Protestant churches such as the Anglicans. For the Catholic Church from November 1, 1950 it was defined as a dogma or recognition of faith by Pope Pius XII.

The feast of the Assumption of the Virgin is celebrated by the Catholic Church from the sixth century in the East and from the seventh century in Rome, and constitutes the last of the Marian dogmas established by a Pope, according to his encyclical "Many God” namely: The Virgin is the New Eve, united and subservient to the new Adam, united in their opposition against the evil enemy. When she ascended to heaven she already participates in the glory of the resurrection of her son.

Assumption and Ascension

The Ascension is the power of Jesus Christ to ascend to heaven on his own, while the Assumption is the action of taking another in this case to Mary, since she was taken by God to heaven. Establishing these differences is valid in view of the fact that Protestant churches confuse these concepts.

There is official knowledge of the use of the term "Assumption" from the rituals of the Eastern Church of the fourth century in the festivity of "The Memory of Mary" that was carried out in honor of the entrance of the Virgin Mary to Heaven, In the XNUMXth century, this festival was called the Dormitio or “Dormition of Mary”, commemorating the end of the earthly pilgrimage of the Virgin and her assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven. In the XNUMXth century, this denomination changed from “Dormition” to “Assumption”.

Writings on the Assumption of Mary

Between the fourth and fifth centuries, supposed stories were written in which the assumption of Mary was already narrated, among which the "assumptionist gospel" of the "Book of Saint John the Evangelist, the Theologian" is known as the oldest in the Byzantine East. . This book and other apocryphal stories were taken as references for other writings and different conferences of oriental speakers. These writings, that the Catholic Church took the theological background and obvious the lack of historical contribution of the same.

Virgin of the Assumption

The Assumption of Mary in the West

The doctrine of the Assumption of Mary in the West was implemented in the twelfth century, after the appearance of the treatise apparently written by Saint Augustine the Ad InterrogateIn this treatise, its author accepted the bodily assumption of the Virgin Mary. Other theologians such as Saint Thomas Aquinas agreed with Saint Augustine. The late development of the doctrine of the Assumption of Mary was due to the difficult political relations between the West and the East, coupled in principle with different languages.

In the XNUMXth century Saint Pius V, when he reformed the brevario He added some quotes that defended the bodily assumption and eliminated the quotes that referred to the theme of the assumption in the book, "Pseudo-Jerome." In this book, it was doubted whether the Virgin Mary had risen to heaven with or without her body, maintaining the belief that she was immaculate, in view of this, it was questioned whether the bodily assumption was also celebrated in the party.

In addition to this book, the book Martirologio written by the monk Usuardo, was also very well received by the convents and chapters. In this book he praised the discretion of the church at that time of not wanting to know "the place that by divine mandate is hidden the temple of the Holy Spirit and our Lord the God”. Likewise, Benedict XIV considered the doctrine of the Assumption as religious, although I do not therefore consider it a dogma.

Statement of faith

In 1946 through the letter Deiparae Virginis Mariae Pope Pius XII requested the episcopate's approval to declare it a dogma, obtaining almost unanimous approval. This result was expected in view of the fact that since 1849, the Holy See began to receive the first requests from the bishops for the declaration of the Assumption of Mary as a doctrine of faith.

In the apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus, Published on November 1, 1950, the declaration of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary as a dogma of faith appeared. It argued that this declaration was supported by liturgical testimony, the beliefs of the Church's parishioners, statements by the Fathers and Doctors of the Church, and the approval of the bishops.

"After several reflections and supplicant prayers raised to God to guide and enlighten us through the Spirit of Truth, to the glory of Almighty God who had special treatment and generosity to the Virgin Mary, for the dignity of his Son, King of kings forever and ever and conqueror of sin and death, to increase the glory of the same venerable Mother, and satisfaction and joy of the entire Holy Church.

By the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul and ours, we promulgate, declare and define to be a divinely revealed dogma: That the Immaculate Mother of God, ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed into body and soul to heavenly glory. November 1th 1950 Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus”.

Arguments of Saint Josemaría

The Assumption of the Immaculate Virgin Mary is the opening of the path to divine fulfillment; it is the joyful promise. We are all pilgrims on earth, and the Virgin Mary, Our Universal Mother, has preceded us and shows us the culmination of the path. This reminds us that it is possible to reach it; if we are faithful to God's teachings, we will reach it. For the Blessed Virgin, in addition to being our example, is the help of Christians.

According to Friends of God, 276…Mary's divine conception is the origin of all the graces that adorn her. Because of this, she was immaculate and full of grace, always a virgin, and she was raised to heaven body and soul. She was named Queen of all creation, above the angels and saints. Above her, only God. As the Mother of God, she has infinite dignity, of the infinite good that is God. In life, we will delve deeply into this inexplicable mystery; our gratitude to Our Mother falls short.

Biblical Evidences for the Assumption of Mary

In the bible there is implicit evidence of the allusions to the assumption of the Holy Immaculate Virgin Mary, this is observed when there is biblical knowledge of its different passages.

In Cantares 8,5: Who is this that comes up from the desert, leaning on her beloved? This question refers to a woman who comes up from the desert with her beloved and it is possible that this is a question related to the Most Holy Mary?

In a passage from San Pedro Damiano we read: “That queen whom the daughters of Zion saw, called most blessed. She more she rises today from the desert, that is, from the world, elevated to the greatness of the royal throne » Referring again to Song 8,5:2, here they use the word translated from the Hebrew meaning to ascend, and that same word is used in 2 Kings 11:8 to narrate Elijah's ascent to heaven. That is to say that this is a biblical precedent to understand in Songs 5: XNUMX Mary as she was assumed into heaven.

The desert is like the world for Saint Peter Damiano, apparently this is so in the light of the Bible, as when it is described: Elijah flees into the desert in 1 Kings 19:4-16 because for Elijah this is a refuge in the world where you feel protected. Also in Matthew 4:1-11 It is observed as the meeting place with God.

In Revelation 12:6. “And the woman herself fled into the wilderness, where God had prepared a place for her, so that they would feed her there for one thousand two hundred and sixty days.” In Revelation 12:14. “But the woman was given two great eagle wings, so that she could fly to her place in the desert, far from the serpent,… If the woman flees to the desert to be protected by God and, in the book of Songs it says that climbs leaning on her beloved, it is evident that she rises from the earth to the Glory of God.

In the passage of Revelation 12:1 it is interesting to see the verb translated from Hebrew to Spanish that means "prepared" this verb is widely used in books that narrate about eschatological realities that God has prepared for his faithful: "but that sitting to my right or to my left, it is not for me to give it, but it will be given to those for whom it is prepared (Mark 10:40)”

In Psalm 45:9 Daughters of kings are among their illustrious ones; The queen stands at your right hand with gold from Ophir. In the Old Testament of the Bible, when they refer to the mother of the King, she was the one known as the Queen Mother or Gebirah.

In the Old Testament there are several mothers of Kings who were Queens, such as Bathsheba (1 Kings 2,19:13), the mother of Jeconiah in (Jer 18:29,2) and Jeremiah 2:10,13. Also the mother of Ahaziah in XNUMX Kings XNUMX:XNUMX. This leads us to ask, why can't Mary be Queen? Although it is known that she has more reasons to be Queen, given that she is the mother of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

When reviewing the different verses of Psalm 45, which is a messianic Psalm applied to Christ, we can find in these: Psalm 45:6. Your throne, O God, is eternal and forever; scepter of justice is the scepter of your kingdom. Psalm 45:7. You have loved justice and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness more than your companions. Psalm 45:8. Myrrh, aloe and cassia exhale all your clothes; from the ivory palace they recreate you.

If Psalm 45 is applied to Christ, verses 6 and 7, this means that indeed the queen is his mother and is at the right hand of Christ. As Christ ascended to heaven, then the throne of her mother the Virgin would also have to be, at the right hand of her son Jesus Christ occupying a privileged position in relation to the others who belong to Christ.

In Revelation 12:1. Then a great sign appeared in the sky: a woman wrapped in the sun as if by her garment, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. This is the description that the apostle John had, in which he sees a full-bodied woman and for this he describes it, that she is going up to heaven. If her physical body did not have what she came to see in her vision, why would she have to refer to what she wears on her head and on her feet?

Another sign of this vision is that "she is enveloped by the sun" can be translated as dressed, covered, covered. For what leads to analyze the following biblical passages, namely: Matthew 13:43. Then those who do what God commands will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. If you have ears, listen.

Philippians 3:20-21. 20 But we are citizens of heaven, and we are waiting for the Savior to come from heaven. 21 He is going to change our miserable body, to be like his own glorious body. And he will do it by that same power that he has to dominate all things.

This means that when she is enveloped by the sun, it can refer to the transmutation of her body, for a glorious body in the sky, bright and resplendent. This radiance means the divine grace poured out on those faithful to her teachings, and the case of Mary, that she was full of Grace and for this reason she shines like the sun.

In Revelation 11:19 Then the Temple of God which is in heaven was opened, and the box of his covenant was seen in the temple. And there were lightning, noise, thunder, an earthquake and a heavy hailstorm. This passage is connected with 12:1 in which John has a vision of a resplendent woman who is ascended to heaven, for the letter "Y" refers to the Ark of God in heaven and that Ark is the woman seen in heaven . It has to be made clear that this Ark is not the Ark of the Old Testament.

And it shall come to pass, when ye shall increase in number and multiply in the land, in those days, saith the LORD, that they shall no more say, The ark of the covenant of the LORD; neither shall it come into their mind, neither shall they remember it, neither shall any other be made. At that time they shall call Jerusalem, The throne of the LORD: and all nations shall come to it in the name of the LORD at Jerusalem; neither shall they walk any more after the hardness of their evil heart.. (Jer 3,16:17-XNUMX)

In the previous verse, the prophet Jeremiah is specific in saying that no one will take into account the Ark of the Covenant, passing into oblivion, because they will neither name it nor miss it. This is because there will be a new covenant, as Jeremiah refers in 31:31, since there will be a new ark of the covenant. It should be noted that the Ark is the most prestigious object in Israel since it contained the manna and Aaron's rod (Heb. 9:4), in the new covenant, the bread from heaven, and the High Priest will be Christ.

In John 6:51. I myself am that living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever. The bread that I will give is my own body. I will give it for the life of the world. Hebrews 5: 1-10. That bread will be offered to people who are sorry for their sins and will be given by those chosen by God to the Priesthood, this will be the representative of the parishioners before God. In Luke 1: 28-33 narrates Mary's conception of the son of God and that he was in his womb for 9 months (the new ark), this being the woman John refers to in his vision.

In Luke 1:37-47. It reads how she became Mary the first Christian, and the first to receive the Holy Spirit, when 35 The angel answers her: The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will surround you like a cloud. Therefore the child to be born will be set apart for God, and they will call him the Son of God…the first to be called Holy and Blessed (Luke 1:42-48); the first dispenser of grace (Luke 1,39:41-1,38); the first faithful one (Luke 2:5); the first evangelizer (John 2:1); the first to ask Christ to manifest his power (John 5:XNUMX-XNUMX).

For all this we can say that Mary forms the first fruits, and therefore she had to be vivified before "the harvest" or "those who belong to Christ", before the second coming, Mary had to be vivified, and she was, by being Assumed to heaven.
