Fasting in our relationship with God
Fasting is not just stopping eating in the quest to lose weight or stick to a dietary regimen. This practice goes beyond all that if we see it as an effective tool in our spiritual approach to God.
If this is the context we want to give to fasting and we decide to do it, we must immerse ourselves in a spiritual search for God. Make silence to be able to listen to his voice, pray and be intimate with him.
So fasting must be voluntary, sincere and genuine if we want to grow in communion with God. By fasting we choose to feed ourselves spiritually to discard the physical need to eat, drink or perform some other activity from the flesh.
Our focus during the fast should be on seeking to be in God's presence in intimacy. And the best way to achieve this is by reading his word, shouting hymns of praise and worship while fasting.

Types of fasting mentioned in the Bible

Verses about the total fast
The total fast is the most rigid and severe of the fasts that the Bible speaks of. It is tremendously radical because you cannot eat or drink anything. It is important when performing this type of fast that the body is in perfect health since it will not receive any type of nutrients for a long time.
One of the verses about total fasting that we can find in the Bible as a reference is the following:
Esther 4:16: -Go and gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day ; my maids and I will do the same. Then, although it is against the law, I will go to the king. If I have to die, I will die.-
Always behind a fast there is a request, cry or petition to God. In the case of a total fast for its severity, the situation cries out which is safer than it warrants.
As was the case with Esther who cried out to God for the life of her people. The total fast should be done for short periods of time and not more than three days. The most common periods of a total fast are 6, 12 and 24 hours.
Verses about water fasting
Fasting consuming only water is one of the best known as well as the most practiced. During this fast you do not eat anything or drink anything other than water.
As hydration is allowed while fasting, the period can be prolonged a little more than the total fast. But in the same way, the recommendation of medical surveillance before and during the fast is maintained, especially if it is exceeded for more than two days.
The greatest example of this type of fasting is given to us by Jesus during his stay in the desert and before beginning his earthly ministry. It then serves as a reference between the verses on fasting with water, the following:
Luke 4:1-2: 1 The Spirit of God came powerfully into Jesus. And when Jesus left the Jordan River, the Spirit led him into the wilderness. 2 There, for forty days, the devil tried to tempt him, and Jesus ate nothing . At the end of the forty days, he was hungry.
One modality of fasting with water is to drink fruit water, adding a few drops of lemon juice to it.
Verses about partial fast
The partial fast is one that excludes meals everything that can give pleasure to the pleasure of eating. So the only meal consist of simple foods to keep the body nourished.
In this sense, the partial type is a fast that can be much longer in hours and days. In the Bible the best example of this type of fast is found in the character of Daniel.
The prophet Daniel renounced eating delicious foods, as well as eating meat and drinking wine. This fast is indicated for those with a health condition that prevents them from doing any other fast.
Daniel 10:2-3: “I had another dream about what was going to happen. When it happened, Cyrus had already been king of Persia for three years. That dream, too, was very difficult to understand, but I set my mind to understanding it, and I did .” For three weeks I was very sad. I didn’t eat meat or drink wine, or taste anything I liked.
Verses about other types of fasting
In the Bible we find verses about fasting that have nothing to do with not eating or drinking. Here are some of them:
1 Corinthians 7:5: Do not deny each other, except for a time of mutual consent, to devote themselves to prayer. But come back together later, lest Satan tempt you for not being able to control yourself.
Isaiah 58:6: But it really isn't! “The fast that pleases me is that they free the prisoners chained unjustly, it is that they free the slaves, it is that they let the mistreated go free and that they put an end to all injustice;
Ezra 8:23 23 So we fasted and prayed to our God for our trip and he answered our prayers.
