Less than a week to go until The Irishman. The list of cinemas where The Irishman will be shown in Spain is certainly not the kind of film news we had planned to publish on Postposmo . But the situation is what it is: a strong contender for best film of 2019 (with all due respect to Parasite ) is going to be released in around forty Spanish cinemas (the final number is 45, although the distributor indicates that the list could change). It's certainly not the release one would expect for a film that is receiving unanimous critical acclaim and currently boasts a 94 average score on Metacritic.

Tristar has just released the list of cinemas showing The Irishman in Spain this Friday. We have updated the list we initially included based on information from Filmaffinity, Diario Sur, Multicines Norte, Cines Casablanca , and Odeon Multicines. Tristar had not published any cinema listings until four days before The Irishman's release.

If we recall the predicament film lovers faced last year with Alfonso Cuarón's Roma , we have reason for optimism (or for not total despair, if you prefer). Roma was only released in three cinemas in Spain (the Verdi cinemas in Madrid and Barcelona, and the Albéniz cinema in Málaga). With less than a week to go before the release date of The Irishman (November 15), the silence surrounding its distribution has been almost absolute. Tristar only released the list of 45 cinemas last Monday:

The Irishman: a premiere "misfortune"
After its theatrical release in Spain, The Irishman will premiere on Netflix on November 27. Having financed the $140 million budget for Martin Scorsese's new film, Netflix has refused to distribute it in the way it would have been done in Hollywood's heyday (as Scorsese himself might say) . Meanwhile, cinemas have not welcomed the very brief exclusive theatrical run the film would have enjoyed . Somewhere in between, this strange kind of agreement has been reached, for which there is virtually no precedent.
John Fithian, president of the National Association of American Theatres (NATO), has described the current situation surrounding the theatrical release of The Irishman as "a disgrace." The problem is by no means unique to Spain:
"It is very disappointing that Netflix and its owners have not found a way to put a Martin Scorsese film on many screens," Fithian said. "A first-rate director like Scorsese, a cinephile who has made some of the most important films in history."
