Sarah's Key

Sarah's Key (2010) is a French film directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner in 2010. The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by the French writer Tatiana de Rosnay, and is called in French "Elle s'appelait Sarah" (2007). In turn, this novel is based on real events that occurred during the Nazi occupation of France (known as the Winter Circuit Raid). It is interspersed between the present and the 1940s, so in each chapter one era or another alternates, telling two different but related stories.

Argument

Sarah and her family were arrested by the French gendarmerie at their home in Paris and taken to the Winter Circuit. But not all members of the family have been led because Sarah's younger brother Michel is hiding in the closet of her Paris apartment, and Sarah believes he will be safe. Sarah closed the door outside and put away the key that opens the closet.

After spending several days in an inhumane environment with her parents and thousands of other Jews, she was transferred to a concentration camp, where the men were separated from the women and children and spent days of hell. Subsequently, these men were transferred again, first to the men, to the women the next day, then to the children, who were left in the hands of the only people who were being watched by the French police. Sarah escapes with her friend Rachel, but her friend gets sick.

They arrived at the house of an elderly couple who did not want to help them. The next day, the husband found them while spending the night in his barn. Rachel was treated but died, Sarah reported her story.

In May 2002, Julia Jarmond, an American journalist based in Paris for twenty years, was ordered to write an article on the 60th anniversary of the French gendarmerie attack on the Jews. Julia is married to Bertrand Tézac and is with her 11-year-old daughter named Zoë, who little by little will discover the main events of destiny in 1942. A story directly related to her relative, Tézac. After finding out, she will not rest until she learns the fate of young Sarah and her relationship with her husband's family.

Developed

In the 1940s, we came across a raid in Paris and many Jewish families were arrested, including the family of a girl named Sarah. On the night of her arrest, the police violently called her to her home and asked her and her mother to pack her luggage for three days because they had to accompany them. Her husband was hiding and the police asked her, the woman replied that she did not know where she was, that she had been away for a few days.

Sarah saw her brother, who had never been seen by the police, and without thinking, she hid him in a secret closet, locked the key outside, and then she and her mother left. When the woman left the house, she called her husband. He appeared and was also detained in the crowd, they looked from the window, some people were surprised, some were angry at what was happening and others supported the operation. The arrest was made by the French police, they had ordered the arrest of Jews from Germany and they did so.

Sarah's family took a train to a piece of land outside Paris, where the authorities rounded up all the Jews. In rural areas there is no food or drink and people gradually become dehydrated due to hunger and heat sources. Sarah is getting more and more worried about her brother: the water and food she put in the cupboard must have run out by now.

She was dirty, but she had nowhere to wash and she was embarrassed because she smelled so bad, like everyone else. She didn't know what would happen because no one explained it to her and she saw that her parents were getting frustrated with her. She kept asking her father why she had to sew the Star of David on her clothes and why they were there.

He heard that all people with this badge are considered pigs, bad, criminals, but he doesn't understand why they are stigmatized from the first day until the next day. She also wanted to know if she would stop being that kind of person if she took off the star, but would still be the same; Sarah was very confused.

Shortly after, the man separated from the woman and the girl quickly and cruelly. There was no time to say goodbye, and these people were sent directly to the sealed train at Auschwitz. There is no food or drink on the train, not even toilets, which makes the journey long and exhausting. Many people died before reaching the concentration camp.

The mother was shocked and had to cry because she knew what had happened and her husband was sent to his death. Soon after, the children were separated from their mothers and many of them resisted and were beaten to fainting. Sarah lost consciousness due to fever and nervousness at the time and woke up three days later in a camp surrounded by children and was locked behind a high fence guarded by soldiers to prevent them from contacting the adult camp.

Although it can be guaranteed that they were somewhat comfortable, Sarah decides to run away with another girl, Rachel. Before going over the fence, they were stopped by a guard, Sarah knew that it was the guard who allowed her to take a piece of fruit, an adult had passed on the other side of the fence. She asked that she let them go and, after hesitating for a second, the guard personally lifted the wire so they could escape. She advised them not to stop and remove the Star of David from their clothing when they were safe to avoid trouble.

After wandering around for a few hours, they arrived at a farm where the peasant was an elderly couple, they welcomed them, bathed them and took care of them. But Sarah's partner is very sick and she must call the doctor. The family's trusted doctor is missing and they have no choice but to call a military doctor, so they don't find Sarah and declare her a traitor.

Unfortunately, Rachel died and the doctor took her body to the police car because the guards had found the two missing girls from the camp and were looking for them, although they searched the house but did not find Sarah. Sarah insisted on going to the city, to her house, if necessary she would go alone, she had to know about her brother.

The couple implied that their brother must be dead. She still convinced them to go into town, to Sarah's house. They took the train, met many soldiers, and disguised Sarah as a man, so that she would not be recognized, and even bribed the guards who used money to collect the tickets.

An army officer came over and told the couple that their grandson was as handsome as a German: blond, blue-eyed, bright-eyed, which made Sarah think. She knew that at first glance she could recognize a Jew, but they did not know her and believed that he was a child.

They arrived at the house, knocked on the door and a boy opened it. Sarah pushed him away, ran to the closet, and opened it with her key, which she had kept for a long time before she saw the terrible sight of the little rotting corpse. The children and parents living in the house are very surprised, they do not know anything, and they feel the feeling inside. The man decided not to tell his wife that he wasn't home when it all happened and he gave the old couple money so they could support Sarah as much as possible. The man asked them not to tell the girl anything, they kept the secret.

Sarah continued to live with the elderly and moved to the United States as an adult, where she married and gave birth to a son, but kept quiet about her past until she committed suicide. She lived for many years, until her self committed suicide.

Julia married Bertrand Tézac in 2002 and they have a daughter named Zoë. They moved into the husband's grandmother's apartment, but it needs to be remodeled, so they visit him to study what changes should be made. There is a new topic in Julia's article, which is her foray into the "Winter Velodrome." She is an American living in Paris and she doesn't know anything about this fact or about the arrested Jews, so she is very fascinated by this article.

Well at some point they start to investigate with a photographer and they both realized they didn't know much. They found an older witness and went to her house to interview her. She told them that looking from her window, she saw all these people leave, many people were on the street, on the bus, and no one knew where or why they were taken. People were very confused, there are more and more empty apartments in the city, and soon these empty apartments would be occupied by other families.

On the contrary, the tone in which he made Julia more curious and prompted her to continue her investigation. However, Julia kept her promise and stopped asking her husband's grandmother. For him, she also insisted on giving up the subject and warned that her article does not make much sense to the public because it is a sensitive and very painful subject that people do not want to remember.

Julia wants to know how the people of Tzak can move into that apartment without asking what happened to the family that lives there. Don't worry about what happened, it seems a shame: there are many families, and Parisians are not surprised where those who have never returned have gone. Julia began to postpone her menstruation, but she did not think she was pregnant because she had experienced several miscarriages since she had Zoë, and many years have passed since she was born Zoë. However, the pregnancy test gave positive results.

She kept the news a secret for a while, but decided to share it with her husband who wanted to have a baby. Ella Julia She met her husband at her restaurant, where he asked her to marry him, and there she discovered that she was cheating on her with another woman. To her surprise, when she told him the news, she told him that it was best to have an abortion because she did not want to be a father again when she was 50 years old.

Julia continued studying and thinking about the baby, so much so that it had been difficult for her to have it and now she has to have an abortion because her husband refused to be with her. Witnesses continued to appear and be interviewed to complete this article. Similarly, Julia and the photographer visited many places to understand what happened with a short memory. Julia tried to find out who lived in the apartment that would become her family's residence.

Julia is increasingly suspicious of her in-laws because they don't want her to talk about it and she strongly believes that they are hiding something. She wanted to know at all costs what had happened to the girl, so she went back to the apartment to see if there were any new clues. She finds out where the Jews gather and visits the cemetery. Now there are students in the camp, and there is a memorial with a long list of the names of the deportees, including Sarah's parents.

Once again they condemned Nazi barbarism, as in every plaque they found, which mentioned that they were German victims. But Julia believes that they are to blame, because the French police arrested all these people and caused their deaths.

Julia decided to tell her sister about the new baby. She told him that he was not only her husband's son, but also her son, so she had to make a decision about it. Julia told her husband that he wanted to stay married to her. He replied that if he had children, he would divorce her because at that age he did not want to father her. If she wanted to stay with him, she would have to have an abortion.

The next day, Julia went to visit her husband's grandmother, where she met Edward. After the visit, her mother-in-law told her that they had moved out of the house when they were little, but one day a girl came and opened a cupboard they didn't recognize. He and his father found inside it the body of a child. They didn't know anything, they thought the stench was due to the pipe, so they called the plumber, but the closet was hidden and they weren't aware of it. Her father told him that they shouldn't say anything to her mother, Bertrand's grandmother, so he didn't want Julia to keep asking him.

In this way, Julia can discover what happened, in addition, Sarah would be saved. However, no one in this family knows. After her grandfather's death, she kept several confidential documents in a safe, but his son Edward had never opened the documents until now, hoping to find something related to Sarah. Now they both want to know what happened to that girl.

When they got home, Julia found an envelope on the table with her name on it. Inside is a folder with Sarah's name written on it and contains many files related to the girl, including a letter from her grandfather to send money to the elderly couple, which Sarah did not know about. Julia decided to have an abortion because her husband was on a business trip, so she went to the clinic alone.

He took Sarah's folder to investigate further and found the old couple's surname Dufaure there, which is a common surname, so he thought it would be difficult for him to trace them. She started looking through the phone book and then called to see if she could find any more information.

In a phone call, he met with Dufaure's relatives, and even his interlocutors claimed to have heard of Sarah, but they had heard of Sarah Dufaure. The woman on the phone told her that she could talk to her grandfather Jules Dufaure, who would tell her what she wanted to know. At that moment the nurse came in and told her that it was time for her abortion. Julia refused to leave the clinic. The last letter Sarah sent from the United States was that she was about to get married, but later the elders lost track of her.

After arriving home, Julia told her husband that she had not had an abortion and that she knew what would happen. Zoë is sent to the United States with Julia's family, and then she too will travel with her daughter and follow Sarah's trail.
