17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.
Taking this into consideration, as Christians, we must be vigilant about everything that enters our bodies. We must understand that just as in the Old Testament, the best temples were built for the Lord, we must care for, sanctify, and heal our bodies.
The reason for this affirmation by the Holy Spirit is that each one of us has been redeemed after the death of the Lord Jesus. Under this new dispensation of grace, the Lord blesses us by causing the Holy Spirit to dwell in each one of us.
That is why we must live in both spiritual and earthly communion with the Lord. Just as God asks us to pray daily, He forbids us from eating animal blood, and He asks us to maintain communion with Him, He calls us not to sin either through sight or speech.
Caring for the Temple of God
We already learned that our body is the Temple of the Lord and that the Holy Spirit dwells in us. Which makes us responsible for the care of the temple both spiritually and physically. Paul in the first letter he sends to the Corinthian Church informs them that God holds us fully responsible for the treatment we give to the new temple of God.

But if we develop an illness, it can be for various reasons; one could be genetic or simply a trial we're going through. As Christians, we must know that the Lord Jesus is preparing us for His kingdom, so the lessons and strengths we develop here will be the ones we apply in the new land promised by God.
Psalm for health: The Lord is my Shepherd
This is a powerful Psalm for any moment of life. Psalm 23 shows us the Father's care for us Christians. When the Lord compares us to every other part of the creation He made, He compares us to sheep. When we try to understand this comparison, which the Lord makes in various parts of the Holy Scriptures, we realize several things.
The first is that sheep are animals characterized by being unproductive and completely defenseless. When we analyze the defense mechanisms of each of the animals that inhabit the Earth, we realize that sheep are completely lacking in this.
Another characteristic of sheep is their poor ability to navigate independently and their lack of a well-developed sense of sight, so it's always necessary to have a guide watching over the flock. However, they have developed hearing, so they rely on this sense of hearing to guide them when following their shepherd.
When we analyze these traits, as Christians, the Lord tells us that we cannot help ourselves without His divine intervention. If the Lord had not sent His only Son into the world, we would not have been able to understand our mission in this world. Like the sheep, we cannot see the Lord, but we can hear His Word and His teachings through the Holy Scriptures.
Salmo 23: 1
At the beginning of the psalm for health, we read the name of God, Jehovah. We must remember that God is a title, but when God introduces Himself to Moses and he asks what He would say if he were asked by name, the Lord answers: I AM WHO I AM. When we analyze the beginning of this psalm, we realize that King David pronounces the name of the Lord so that there is no doubt that he knows that God is the One who cares for him.
Following David's affirmation, we read, "I shall not want." In various times of tribulation, many of us have said that we lack money, or don't have enough, or are short. In those moments, we must immediately stop and analyze what we did to get to that point, because when we follow Jesus correctly, we should lack nothing; it is a promise, and Jehovah is a God of truth.

1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

King David, after expressing that only Jehovah is the one who guides him and that thanks to this he can have what he needs in this life, reveals to us the great blessings that the Lord will have in store for us if we follow his path.

If we accept Christ as our only God and savior, He will first give us the following blessings.
Salmo 23: 2
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters.
The first part of the verse shows us how the Lord will give us a place where our illnesses, worries, and pains will be gone, because with Him we can rest in peace.
It has been scientifically proven that rest is something that all human beings need to reactivate each of our five senses. Therefore, when the weight of our afflictions tires us, we must seek refuge in our Lord, who will provide our rest.
The reason we believe that Jesus came and sacrificed himself for us is because of the faith we have in him. So, when we don't accept the promises he has given us, it's because we haven't grown spiritually and are lacking in faith.
Hebrew 4:1-2
Let us fear, therefore, that while the promise of entering into his rest still remains , any of you should seem to have fallen short of it.
2 For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard it did not combine it with faith.
The Lord comfort my soul
When we, as Christians, don't leave things in God's hands and accept His will for us, we begin to experience all kinds of afflictions. As human beings, we can understand that there are illnesses that are difficult to manage, such as cancer, leukemia, and cardiovascular disease, to name a few. They make us feel completely helpless, and it's difficult, because we are human, to let go of fear and uncertainty.
Salmo 23: 3
3 He restores my soul; He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name's sake.
But it is in these moments of difficulty that we must remember every promise the Lord gives us. If his Son Jesus, before being captured, prayed and asked the Lord that if it were up to him to pass that cup, but that in the end the Father's will would be fulfilled, we should do so even more.
As humans, feelings will always win over reason. Christ knows this, and that's why He tells us in His Word to cry out to Him and He will answer. We know that for various reasons we will feel anger, pain, uncertainty, and despair, but let us remember that the Lord is our light in the world.

Human beings are never prepared for death, in any setting, whether it's a family member's death or their own. In some cultures, death is seen as the final act of retribution for some wrongdoing, so they celebrate it when it happens. However, in almost the entire world, death signifies pain and anguish.
For us Christians, death has a somewhat more transcendental meaning. Certainly, in the flesh and with our limited understanding of God's wisdom, we don't understand when a family member, friend, or companion passes away. It hurts, and it's a feeling that will always accompany us. But we have a consolation that gratifies us and lightens our burden: the promise of eternal life.
Filipenses 1: 21
21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
This does not mean that we are not going to cry, lament or feel uncertainty in the face of what can happen to us. But we must remember that Jehovah is my Shepherd and I will lack nothing.
You are with me Lord
Continuing with the affirmations King David gives us, he emphasizes that the presence of the Lord frees us from all fear of the unknown, illness, sadness, even death. No matter the circumstances we find ourselves in, the Lord calls us to trust in Him.
Later, in this Psalm of healing, David shows us that, even in the most difficult times, the Lord will have mercy, kindness, and provision for each of those who have declared Him Lord, God, and Savior, live in His commandments, and in communion with Him.
Psalms 23: 4-6
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

At the beginning of this Psalm for health, King David salutes the poor. One might think he is referring to people with limited financial resources. However, in a slightly broader sense, we can deduce that the king meant to refer to the weak or the defenseless.
Just as in Psalm 23, King David gives us a list of blessings that Jehovah gives to those who believe. It's worth noting in these Psalms that the Lord doesn't use any crutches when asking us to do something supernatural. After Christ was on Earth, he left us commandments and a structure of life that God in human form showed us is possible. Jesus Christ knows our weaknesses and what we cannot do, so we must live in communion with Him to enjoy His Holy Presence.
The list of blessings that begins in this Psalm is “ the Lord will deliver him in the day of trouble .” As Christians, we understand that there will be days of great tribulation, but the Lord promises that He will take care of us. Like David, we must trust that each of these things will come to pass.
Psalms 41: 1-3
1 Blessed is he who considers the poor; in the day of trouble the Lord will deliver him.
2 The Lord will protect him and keep him alive; he will be blessed in the land, and you will not hand him over to the will of his enemies.
3 The Lord will sustain him on his sickbed; in his illness you will restore him to full health.
A sinner's plea
King David, after listing the promises he knows the Lord will fulfill in difficult times, such as illness, teaches us that, although we know God is with us, we must acknowledge each of our sins and ask forgiveness for them. Let us remember that to be in the presence of the Lord and be able to ask for anything, we must strip ourselves of everything we are and say to the Lord with our own words: I am yours, do with me your holy will.
God calls us to have a heart full of mercy and love for our neighbors, and to achieve this, we must confess each of our sins. When the Psalm for salvation refers to my enemies, we can understand it as those people who will cause us to doubt God's will in our lives.
As Christians, we will encounter people who will tell us, "You believe in Christ, look, you're sick. If God loved you, you wouldn't have cancer," among many other examples we can assure you've heard. But we must be strong and understand that we live in bodies that are constantly deteriorating and that, by natural law, our cells die every day, exposing us to various diseases.
Psalms 41: 4-6
4 I said, “O Lord, have mercy on me; heal my soul, for I have sinned against you.”
5 My enemies speak evil of me, asking: When will he die, and his name perish?
6 And if they come to me, they speak lies; their heart gathers iniquity for itself, and when they go out they spread it abroad.
In sickness I trust in you Father
Following the order of ideas of this Psalm for health written by King David, it continues to focus on the fact that, although he knows that many enemies surround him and murmur, he has confidence that his face will be lifted up. 9 Even my close friend, whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.
A prayer and praise of the Lord in the Psalm for health
At the end of this Psalm for health, like the previous one, King David offers praise and thanks to the Father, because in the most turbulent moments he saw the face of the Lord. God sustained him and lifted his head before his enemies, showing his full glory. That is why we must thank God every day, because only He can lift us up in tribulations, only He makes us greater than adversity, and only He makes us strong in the face of the doubts that arise in our souls and hearts.
The same is true for us: the Lord does not abandon us with burdens we cannot bear alone. For this reason, he sent his only Son to Earth to bear the weight of sin and save us from eternal death.
Psalms 41: 10-13
10 But you, O LORD, have mercy on me, and raise me up, and I will repay them.
11 By this I will know that I am pleased with you, that my enemy does not triumph over me.
12 As for me, you have upheld me in my integrity, and have set me before you forever.
13 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, forever and ever. Amen and Amen.
Let us recognize that without God the Father we cannot do anything or navigate through significant difficulties. Therefore, let us live in communion with Christ through the Holy Spirit and be able to be heard by the Father.
That is one of our goals as Christians: to live so deeply in the Lord that even in difficulties and illnesses we can live in His eternal joy. A place where nothing disturbs us and where our burdens are lightened thanks to God's love for each of us.
Final Thoughts
When we as Christians first meet the Lord, at first we struggle to understand His grace and love for each of us, and this is entirely understandable. From the Old Testament, Jehovah calls us to trust and have faith that with Him at our side, absolutely everything is possible. And thanks to our faith, our life in the Word, and constant communion with the Lord, we can see His blessings bear fruit in our lives.
We know that in times of tribulation, it is difficult to understand and remember the promises of the Lord Jesus Christ, since at that time we are living in the flesh. Illness, whatever it may be, can bring us anguish, fear, anger, indignation, doubt, and even death in some cases. But, beloved of God, we must understand that no matter the moment or the valley we are going through, our Lord is with us every step of the way.
Living in the shadow of the Almighty gives us a peace that no mind understands, a joy that humans envy, and a certainty from the things that generate uncertainty. We Christians, even though we are on Earth, do not belong to this world, and even though adversity pains us in the flesh, our faith must be far greater than anything.
For this reason, we recommend that you live in eternal communion with the Lord, especially in times of anguish and illness, because only He will give rest to your soul and body. Only He can comfort you and give you the breath of life; only Jesus, who died on the Cross of Calvary and rose again three days later, can give you eternal life. Therefore, believe that if you walk with the Lord, whatever you ask in His Holy name, and if it is God's will, it will be granted to you.
