History of the Virgin of Loreto
After telling you what the prayer of the Virgin of Loreto is, we are going to give you some references on how this Marian devotion began, so that you can understand what its importance is for the church and for its faithful devotees.
The history of this Virgin begins in the XNUMXth century, when the House where the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ are believed to have been born, is mysteriously moved from Nazareth to Croatia, in the Tarseto Province.
This occurs because the Malemucos threatened the Palestinians, the presumption that it was the angels who moved the house to save it is maintained. The inhabitants of this province do not know how the house got to this place, but they immediately knew that it was the house of the Virgin Mary.
The story or legend tells that the Virgin appeared to a priest when he was dying to tell him that this house had come to Dalmatia so that it would not be destroyed by the invaders. Miraculously, this priest was healed and publicly manifested the vision he had on his deathbed.
Its dedication began in the 1291th century. Tradition holds that this is the house where Mary received the annunciation of the Incarnation of the Son of God and where she lived with her husband Joseph and her son Jesus. In XNUMX, this house was moved to Tarseto. Palestine was under siege. The Crusaders had already conquered the city of Acre and then moved on to Palestine.
The people of Dalmatia, seeing the house there, could not explain how it had arrived, but later the priest appeared, who we had mentioned before and informed them that this was the holy house of the virgin, inside it there was an altar and in it a small figure made in cedar of a virgin with the child in her arms.
Mysteriously in the year 1294 the holy house appears on the opposite shore of the Adriatic, in a forest of laurel trees, since then it began to be called the house of Loreto which means house full of laurels. The house began to be visited by many pilgrims and thieves who assaulted these travelers also began to appear.
Eight months later, the house is mysteriously changed again, coming out of the forest and settling on a hill that belonged to Counts Stefano and Simeon Raineldi. But a fight began between them about who was the owner of the house, and again the house disappears and is now seen on a hill of stones that led to Recanati, where it is today.
The sanctuary itself began to be built in the 1601th century, and the house remained inside it. The walls of its basilica over the years were filled with papers, titles and thanksgivings to the Virgin. The Loreto litanies as they are known today began to be prayed there until they were approved by Pope Clement VIII in XNUMX.
Inside the house is an image of the Virgin Mary, dressed in a traditional robe. The original image had darkened over time due to the soot from the lamps used inside. In a fire in 1921, the original statue burned, and a similar one was made, which is the one now on display.
The house itself has three walls attached to a cave dug into the rock. Curiously, some scholars claim to have found documents stating that the house was transported by the Crusaders on a ship when they were expelled from the Holy Land. It is also said that a member of the Angeli family, rulers of Epirus, wanted to save the house from being destroyed by the Muslims. We don't know for sure what the real story is, but what is important is that the devotion to Our Lady of Loreto is very significant today.
The Virgin of Loreto Patron Saint of Aviation
Every December 10th, the Spanish Air Force holds a celebration in honor of Our Lady of Loreto, and this devotion later spread throughout the world. Our Lady of Loreto was canonized by Pope Benedict XV on March 24, 1920, as the patron saint of aviators. King Alfonso XIII similarly placed his entire military air force at the service of Our Lady.
The Holy House as it is also called, was considered a sanctuary for the Virgin, and has become a center for pilgrims, all the walls are full of requests and thanks and it is in her honor that the Lauretan Litany was written.
