Prayer to the Holy Spirit
The Prayer to the Holy Spirit is made to invoke him to grant us his gifts, in the moments of greatest difficulty that we have, when we do it he descends on us to give us his help and protection:
Come to us, O Holy Spirit! And hear our prayers. Spirit of the Father, comfort us. Spirit of the Son, grant us salvation. O Enduring Love, be gracious enough to fill us, that through your fire you may inspire us, and that with your sacred light you may illuminate us.
Holy Spirit, you who are the source of life, please fill us with life, cleanse us of all our sins, and through your anointing, give us the strength we need. May we be comforted through your consolation, guided by your grace, and protected by your angels. Never let us be separated from you. Therefore, God the Holy Spirit, hear us.
That we can be touched with the grace of your fingers and that you can pour on us the current of virtues, give us energy through your gifts and that it is through your fruits that we can have a rest.
May it be you who keep the evil enemy away from us, and who in our last fight can anoint us at the hour of our death to defend ourselves. At that moment, take us with you so that we can be sanctified and thus give praise to the Father, the Son and your person, since you are our consolation of piety in eternity. Amen.
Who is the Holy Spirit?
He is the third person of the Holy Trinity in the Christian world. He is a person entirely distinct from the Father and the Son, yet together they share a single divine essence and nature. His name comes from the Latin * Espritus Sanctus* , which refers to the divine grace present in the communion of the faithful, enabling them to communicate with God and Christ, for it is He who inspires and awakens Christian faith in our hearts.
Another of its derivatives is Divine Grace or Paraclete. According to the Gospel of John, the Paraclete was the one who remained with the disciples after Jesus ceased to be visible. His name means "He who is invoked," and he is also often called Consolator, which means comfort. His main characteristic is that he defends us from punishment, saves us from dangers, and delivers us to salvation in eternity.
In the first Christian communities, the birth of their church was determined by the descent of the Holy Spirit in all the disciples of Jesus, after he was crucified and after his resurrection, in a celebration called Pentecost. The Holy Spirit is the expiration or breath, breath of God and the Son together that are established in a single principle.
Representations
The Holy Spirit has been represented in different ways, all of them described in the Bible, the most mentioned are the following:
- Water: with it the Holy Spirit grants the sacrament of Baptism, which means the new birth in the Christian life.
- Anointing: it is an oil or sacred oil that serves to represent the strength of the Spirit and is used when the sacrament of Confirmation is granted.
- Fire: it is always present in any act of the holy spirit and is the symbolism of energy that can be transformed.
- cloud and light: in this way the Holy Spirit was manifested when he appeared to the Virgin Mary for the Incarnation.
- The stamp: because it is present in all sacramental acts to demonstrate its indelible character.
- Hand: It is through the way hands are laid that the gifts of the Holy Spirit can be transmitted.
- The pigeon: it is the way it was manifested in the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist.
The Gifts of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit has three ways of manifesting his gifts, the first through any benefit received from God, since all the graces of love attributed to the Holy Spirit come from him, the second through supernatural goods and the third by the supernatural perfections that man has at the hand of God.
The Catholic Church gives seven gifts to the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, strength, science, piety, and fear of God. The first four belong to the intellect and serve to perfect it, and the last three are of the will and make its forces perfect.
All these gifts are important for human beings to achieve eternal salvation, since without the favor or will of God no one can have salvation. Each of these gifts has an effect on human beings:
Wisdom : it is a gift par excellence and it is the one that leads to charity; it is granted so that judgments can be made on divine matters and its highest cause is God.
Understanding : to comprehend all that is believable through faith, which leads to virtue.
The advice : to enlighten and give advice on how to take actions that have to do with rules and reason and that lead to prudence.
Fortitude : so that we can face dangers, however strong they may be, to give us more confidence and security through God's favor, also corresponds to the virtue of fortitude.
Piety : This is the kind of devotion that is offered to God, revering and venerating Him in a way that surpasses even the highest expressions of religion, always adhering to the principles of prudence and striving to be filled with the divine spirit. It extends to the veneration of God, extending to all humankind, since we are His creation, and among whom the righteous and the saints stand out.
The one of science : to make the separation of what can be believed from what cannot, judging all causes, having knowledge of invisible things, and that goes or corresponds with the gift of Faith.
Fear of God : in order to mold the will, so that one does not fall into presumptions, so that one can separate the banal from what temperance dictates through the fear of God, that is why it corresponds to hope.
