Biography of Saint Benedict
He was a Christian monk who was probably born in the year 480 in the city of Nursia, in Umbria and who died in Montesino on March 21, 547. It is considered that he was the one who initiated monastic life in the West. He founded the order of the Benedictines, as a monastic organization that was based on autarchy, that is to say that they managed to maintain themselves and were self-sufficient to survive, they worked around a basilica plant and a cloister.
It is believed that he came from a family of nobles, and that probably in the year 500 he would have abandoned his studies in Rome and his home. He leaves this city not to have a hermit's life but to be away from the city. On this trip he finds a monk named Romano de SubÃaco, who lived in a monastery on a mountain that was on a cliff, spoke with him about the purpose of life, and following his advice he decided to become a hermit and became a to live in a cave that was in the cliff for three years, without anyone else knowing about him.
In those years he manages to become a man dedicated to God, with Romano by his side, who always visited him and brought him food. In those three years as a hermit he managed to mature his mind and forge a character about himself and got to know his peers, he began to earn the respect of all people, until they asked him to be the abbot of he. But his hermit way of life was different from that of the monks, so they tried to poison him with a drink, but he always prayed before drinking or eating and while blessing the cup it fell and broke.
Seeing that they did not want him, he went back to his cave, but a priest named Florencio, who was envious of him, wanted to hurt him, and he brings him a bread full of poison, he returns to pray and bless the bread before eating and looks like a crow who takes the bread Since then he spread the fame that he was a miraculous monk. In the year 530 he leaves SubÃaco and founds 12 more monasteries, including that of Montecasino, he also wrote the Holy Rule by which the Benedictine monks are governed.
