Biography of Saint Anthony of Padua
He was born in the city of Lusitanus in Lisbon, probably in the year 1191, his real name was Fernando Martin de Bulhoes e Taveira Azevedo, but when he entered the Order of Friars Minor or better called Franciscans in the year 1220, he changed it to only Antony. His beginning in religious life was in the Augustinian friars, where he studied for several years in an abbey in Lisbon, but in 1220 after the death of three friars of this order in the city of Morocco, he changed to the Franciscan order.
He stood out as a good preacher, in his sermons he spoke about the love one should have for one's neighbor, being charitable, loving God and confessing sins, challenging all the vices of society at the time. His fame was so great that Saint Francis of Assisi himself told him to continue fighting with his words against the heresy that was threatening the Catholic Church.
He traveled through many cities, but fell ill with dropsy, and on his way to a convent he died on June 13, 1231. He was canonized by Pope Gregory XI after only 232 days of death, and in 1946 he was appointed Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XI. During his lifetime and after his death, many miracles were attributed to him, such as having been in two places at the same time, speaking with the fish in the sea and being visited by the Child Jesus.
