Synopsis of Wrinkles by Paco Roca
This story tells us about Emilio, an old bank executive, who is admitted to a nursing home by his family after suffering from an Alzheimer's crisis. In this place he begins to live with his new companions, each with a different clinical picture and very different characters, in addition to the caregivers who care for them.
Emilio begins to get used to the daily routine of this nursing home, with fixed times for taking medicine, taking naps, eating meals, exercising and going back to bed. As well as fighting against the disease that afflicts him to keep preserving his memory and avoid being transferred to the top floor, which is the one for the disabled, with the help of Ernesto, his roommate.
Wrinkles by Paco Roca deals with sensitive issues such as Alzheimer's and senile dementia, very few are treated in comics. Managing to capture in a sensitive way with touches of humor throughout the entire cartoon everything that people who suffer from this disease go through.
Argument from Wrinkles by Paco Roca
The argument Wrinkles by Paco Roca, is based on Emilio, a 72-year-old banking executive who suffers from Alzheimer's, when his family decides to put him in a nursing home.
From here on, new people will begin to appear who are Emilio's companions, each with their own problems; Miguel is an extortionist who takes advantage of the problems of his colleagues, Sol always trying to call his children on the phone, Juan who only repeats what he hears all the time, Rosario lives immersed in his memories or Modesto who also suffers from Alzheimer's. among others.
This book tells us about a fresh and moving story, where Emilio fights to hide his illness through different lies and trying to prevent the advance of this disease or to hide it, so that he is not transferred to the top floor of the residence where those who are they cannot fend for themselves.
It is a story through a comic that invites us to reflect, where a voice is given to all those people who end their lives separated from the family, far from their love and affection.
Creation of the story
For the creation of this story Wrinkles by Paco Roca, the author noted in his notebook the idea of telling the story about a group of elderly people who plan the robbery of a casino in a visit that was organized by the nursing home and after learning that after reaching 70 years they could not lock themselves up in a jail. What prompted the author to develop this story in addition to the idea he already had was:
- The aging of their parents.
- The refusal of an advertising poster where it had incorporated some elderly people.
- Alzheimer's suffered by the father of a friend.
For this, the author documented himself for a year, reading about the diseases of old age, visiting geriatric institutions and collecting stories from nurses, family members and the patients themselves. This story was published at the end of April 2007, achieving a second edition shortly after.
