The Mysteries of the Rosary

With this new change in the rosary the mysteries were catalogued as follows: first the Joyful Mysteries, second the Sorrowful Mysteries, and thirdly the Luminous Mysteries and finally the Glorious Mysteries are performed.
Joyful Mysteries
In the Joyful Mysteries you can find various themes related to the rosary of the Virgin Mary, which has very deep roots which suggest how the last motivations of Christian joy were, led by the gaze towards the mystery of the incarnation and the mystery of pain. These mysteries are usually performed on Mondays and Saturdays, therefore each mystery is listed as follows:
First Mystery – The Incarnation of the Son of God
The first joyful mystery is described as the Angel Gabriel sent by God went to a city located in Galilee to find the Virgin Mary who was engaged to a man from David's family, named Joseph, in order to give him the Lord's message.

The virgin surprised by what the angel Gabriel tells her, with great emphasis tells her that she cannot get pregnant, since she has never had relations with any man, saying this the same angel tells her that the Holy Spirit will come down and cover her with his mantle so that the child will be Holy and in such a way will be in reality the son of God, when the Angel Gabriel finished his announcement, he moved away from the Virgin Mary, so she ended up saying that if he will have the son of God She will be your servant forever.
Second Mystery – The Visitation of Mary to her Cousin Saint Elizabeth
After Mary saw the angel Gabriel, she made a trip to a town located on a mountain in Judah where her cousin Elizabeth lived. When she entered the house and greeted her cousin, the son that Elizabeth was carrying in her womb jumped happily for what her cousin tells her that she is blessed among women and blesses her womb for bearing the fruit of the Lord.
Third Mystery – The Birth of the Son of God in Bethlehem
A few months later, Emperor Augustus issued a decree where a census should be carried out in the entire region, so Joseph, seeing that he had to register in his city, took his wife, the pregnant Virgin Mary, and they left the city of Galilee. to go to Bethlehem of Judea, directly to the city of David, where Jesus was born and grew up. Once in Bethlehem, it was time for Mary to give birth to her first-born son, who she wrapped in blankets and put him to bed in a small manger, since there was no room in the shelter for the three of them.
Fourth Mystery – The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple
When they spent the night in the manger and the day of purification mandated by the law of Moses arrived, Joseph and Mary took their son to Jerusalem to present him to the great Lord, as expressed in the law where it says that every firstborn male must be consecrated by God and must also be offered a sacrifice by delivering a pair of pigeon pigeons.
In that place in Jerusalem at that time there was a man who, being just and very pious, the Holy Spirit was in him and had prophesied that he would not be able to die before seeing the son of God, so this man waited patiently in the temple to Joseph and Mary to see their son, carry him in his arms and praise God for fulfilling his task.
Fifth Mystery – The Lost Child Found in the Temple
As the years passed, the little child Jesus was growing, gaining strength and possessing much wisdom which was given by the grace of God. While he was enjoying a healthy life, Joseph and Mary traveled every year for the Passover festivities in Jerusalem, on their twelfth birthday, they made the decision to take him with them so that he could enjoy and see the beautiful celebration.
Once the celebration is over, Mary and Joseph return to Bethlehem thinking that their son was in the caravan, but what they did not know is that little Jesus had been left alone in Jerusalem, realizing this, they went out in search of their son, starting with the caravan so they walked for a whole day when they did not find him, they searched among their relatives and acquaintances but they had no answers about the whereabouts of Jesus.
Seeing that they did not know about him they returned to Jerusalem to continue looking, after three days they found their son who was in the temple in the midst of several bishops asking them things and talking to them, Joseph and Mary seeing their son They asked various questions to which he only answered by saying, why were they looking for him if he was only taking care of the purposes that his father sent him to carry out, so that his parents did not know what to think of such a strange answer.
Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary
These mysteries can also be known as the mysteries of pain, which lead all devotees to relive what was the death of Jesus, standing next to the Virgin Mary in front of the cross to feel the great renewing force before the love of God. The Sorrowful Mysteries are performed only on Tuesdays and Fridays as follows:
First Mystery – The Prayer in the Garden
When Jesus was already an adult, he traveled with his disciples to a city called Gethsemane. Three times he asked them to help him pray to remove all temptations, but always when he returned from praying alone for his salvation and sadness, everyone was asleep, so Jesus, seeing them exhausted, told them to sleep and rest, since in the morning the son of God would deliver himself into the hands of those sinners.
Second Mystery – The Flagellation of the Lord
That same day when Jesus surrendered, he met the governor, who asked him if he was the king of the Jews, but without thinking about it, he replied that he did not know if he was, so in the face of so many accusations about him, he did not answer any questions. , which left the governor very surprised. The same governor in each celebration that he carried out always released an imprisoned person chosen by the people themselves and not by him.
Pilate, at one point during the celebration, asked the people who they would release, Barabbas or Jesus. The response shouted by the people was to release Barabbas and put Jesus to death. Being in the middle of the court, Pilate's wife, who was the governor, begged her not to get involved in the problems of Jesus, since she had dreamed how those who judged Jesus would suffer in hell.
The governor, being aware of what his wife confesses, asks the people again if they are sure of what they are asking for and they shout louder and louder freedom to Barabbas death to Jesus, so Pilate washed his hands in front of his people saying that he will be innocent of the spilled blood of the son of God and without further words he handed over Jesus already whipped.
Third Mystery – The Crowning with Thorns
Jesus was taken by the soldiers inside the palace to dress him with a purple mantle and together with this they made a large crown of thorns that they placed on his head so that he would suffer every time they hit him on the head with a cane, in addition to They spat on him, and after making fun of him and mistreating him, they took off that beautiful purple mantle and put his torn clothes on him.
Fourth Mystery – Jesus carrying the cross
Already humiliated Jesus and whipped by Pilate's guard, he handed him over to the people to be crucified, while Jesus was walking to hand over the people, everyone began to shout that the blood of Jesus would fall on them and their children to take away the guilt their governor and they be the sinners. When Jesus gave himself to the people, they made him walk to a space called Golgotha with a large heavy cross.
Fifth Mystery – Jesus Dies on the Cross
Upon reaching Golgotha, Jesus was given a wine that had gall to drink, when he tasted it he spit it out and did not drink it, once crucified, each of Pilate's soldiers took possession of some pieces of Jesus' clothing, leaving him semi-naked to then sit and guard it, on top of the cross of Jesus they placed each of the charges that for them were good reasons to condemn him.
On Jesus' sides they also crucified two thieves to humiliate him even more, not to mention that everyone who passed by insulted him and said that how could he not be saved from this if he always said he was the son of God. While this was happening, the priests and elders shouted at him to show how he could get down from the cross so that they could believe in him.
During those hours the whole region was covered in darkness but by three in the afternoon Jesus begged God why he had forsaken him, when this happened all the people around him who could hear the prayers for fear that it would happen something, they ran towards Jesus to bring him a sponge filled with vinegar with a cane so that he would not continue speaking but Jesus did not remain silent, since then he shouted his plea again before God thus leaving the earthly plane.
Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary
These mysteries were established by Pope John Paul II, who explained that the Luminous Mysteries reveal a glimpse into Jesus' childhood, the history of the people of Nazareth, and his public life, in order to contemplate Christ and the light he radiates throughout the world. Because of this, the Mysteries of Light, as they are also called, are prayed only on Thursdays and proceed as follows:
First Mystery – The Baptism of the Lord
Jesus to be baptized had to travel from Galilee to the Jordan, upon arrival he met John to be baptized, he did not want to do it so Jesus told him that it was convenient for him to do it to do everything fairly, just as as God commanded. When Jesus was baptized, he came out of the water and began to see how the heavens opened to meet his eternal father who told him that he was his true son and in him he had placed all his trust.
Second Mystery – The Wedding at Cana
After being baptized and having passed three days, the celebration of the wedding at Cana of Galilee took place, the Virgin Mary was there with her son Jesus and his disciples, at one point the wine ran out and the Virgin tells Jesus to perform a miracle, but he immediately tells her that he could not do much but he would try to get more wine.
Jesus searching had visualized six barrels that were for purification rituals of the Jews outside the wedding venue, so he asked his disciples to help him fill the barrels with water to the brim. After having filled everything, Jesus tells them that now they can take the water changed into wine from each barrel, despite the fact that the servants knew what had happened, they called the husband to taste such tasty wine.
The man, not knowing where it came from, confessed to Jesus that they always take out the best wine first and then take out the second-hand wine, but that this time he had excelled himself by leaving the best wine for last, so even though no one knew what Jesus had done, this would be his first miracle.
Third Mystery – The Announcement of the Kingdom of Heaven and the Call to the Conversion of Sinners
After the wedding, John was arrested by the governor, so Jesus had to travel to Galilee immediately to see what had happened. Upon learning what had happened, he began to tell all the sinners that the time had come and that it was time to convert and believe in the kingdom of God.
Fourth Mystery – The Transfiguration of the Lord
After six days Jesus called James, his brother and Peter to go to a high hill to show them how he could change, his face radiated a lot of light like the sun, his clothes became white and in fractions of a second Moses and Elijah appeared to him so he could speak with Jesus in front of them.
When Peter saw those people, he told Jesus that if he liked it, he would place three tents for them, but in the middle of this a great cloud appeared that illuminated the place and in it came a voice that said that Jesus was the one in whom he had put his trust, When Peter, James and his brother heard this voice, they were scared and covered their eyes, so Jesus had to touch them on the shoulder and tell them not to be afraid that it had been nothing more than the voice of God their father.
Fifth Mystery – The Institution of the Eucharist
While eating, the great Jesus took the bread and blessed the food on the table. Then, he broke the bread and gave a piece to each of the disciples, telling them to eat and take it, saying that the piece of bread was his body. Then he took a small cup full of wine to give thanks and gave it to them, telling them to drink from it, saying that it was his blood, the blood of the covenant, shed for many to obtain forgiveness for the sins they had committed. At the moment Jesus left, he assured them that he would not drink wine again until they met again in the kingdom of God.
Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary
By performing the Glorious Mysteries, we can understand how the devotees were nourished by ecclesiastical hope, as they entrusted themselves as followers of God, thus providing a basis for bearing witness to joy to non-believers and validating the word of the Lord. These mysteries are performed on Wednesdays and Sundays.
First Mystery – The Resurrection of the Lord
At dawn on the first day of the week the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene went to visit the tomb of Jesus, but when they were walking they felt a great tremor, what they did not know is that the angel of God had come down from heaven and He moved the stone that closed the tomb and sat on it.
The guards, seeing the angel shining in white clothes, were frightened and ran away, but the women stood watching him as if they knew who he was. When he saw them, he told them that he knew they were looking for Jesus, but he was no longer there, since he had risen just as he had said, so go tell his disciples what had happened and run to Galilee to meet him. The women, feeling so happy, ran away to give the news.
Second Mystery – The Ascension of the Lord to Heaven
Many of those who heard the women ran to see Jesus, when they arrived they simply asked him if it was already time for the kingdom of Israel to be restored, but he told them that he could not tell them anything, since it was not his place, although he could tell them that the Holy Spirit would give them his mantle so that they could be witnesses in Jerusalem and throughout the world at the resurrection.
When he finished speaking to them, he began to rise towards the sky while a very dense cloud was hiding him. The apostles, while they were observing what was happening, had not realized that two men in white appeared in a surprising way, telling them that they were not doing anything looking towards heaven, since the same Jesus who was lifted up would return in the same way.
Third Mystery – The Descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles
On the day of Pentecost, all the apostles were already gathered in the same place where they had met the resurrected Jesus. Suddenly, they heard a loud crash along with a great breeze that reverberated throughout the place where they were. While this was happening, they began to notice lightning bolts falling on each of them.
At the end of such a strange event of the Holy Spirit, all the apostles were already covered by his mantle, and could speak in various languages. After a few minutes, many people began to arrive, curious to know what had happened in that place.
Everyone upon arrival saw how the apostles spoke in other languages, so they were surprised, since they could not believe that they could hear them in their own native languages as in Egypt, Mesopotamia, Libya, Cyrenaica, Asia Minor, Cappadocia, pilgrims from Rome, Cretans and Arabs, among others, like the apostles promulgated the wonders of God.
Fourth Mystery – The Assumption of the Most Holy Mary into Heaven
For the assumption of the Virgin Mary, they had to fix her with many corals embedded in pure gold and she wore a completely embroidered dress to take her to the royal palace along with the other virgins who go behind her to give her happiness and joy.
Fifth Mystery – The Coronation of the Most Holy Mary as Queen and Lady of All Creation
In the fifth glorious mystery, a strange sign appears in the sky. It was a woman dressed entirely like the sun, holding the moon at her feet, and wearing a perfect crown of twelve stars. She was the Virgin Mary, who, at the end of her earthly life and having no sin, was taken up into heaven right next to God and her Son.
For this she is crowned as the Immaculate Virgin and Queen of Angels and of men by her son Jesus, so that she can care for and protect all her children, since she teaches us how to bring a healthy and abundant love to achieve the happiness that we so much desire. Therefore, when the Virgin Mary is crowned, she is elevated above all those saints as the true Queen of Heaven and Earth.
What is the Holy Rosary?
