Here we are. The simple act of having to write this is surreal. At the time of his death, Malcolm was in the thick of the recording process for the backing album for Swimming, qualified Circles. Two different styles complementing each other, completing a circle. Swimming in a circle was the concept. He had been working with Jon Brion, who, after hearing early versions of some of the songs, cleared out his schedule to help Malcolm fine-tune them. After his passing, Jon devoted himself entirely to finishing Circles based on conversations and time spent with Malcolm. We are eternally grateful to Jon and all those who gave their best to the difficult and emotional task of launching this body of work.
This is a complicated process with no right answer. No clear path. All we know is that it was important to Malcolm that the world be able to hear it. One of the hardest decisions in the process is how best to let people know about the record, how to communicate meaningfully while also keeping sacred what should be kept sacred.
