The apex represents the terminal of each leaf, that is, the tip that is furthest from the base. He lets us know the condition of the plant.   • Acuminate: It is when the terminal of the blade is a well-defined point
  • Acute: The terminal of the blade appears as an acute angle.

  • Apiculate: This shape can be described as the apex delicately forming into a fine point.
  • Caudate: It is presented in an elongated shape like a tail.
  • Cuspidated: It is more delicate than the sharply acuminate, as the apex is formed into a fine point.
  • Mucronate:  The apex is shaped like an apiculate, that is, an almost imperceptible point.
  • Mucronulate: It is an apiculate but smaller still.
  • Obtuse: The lamina is elliptical in shape and the apex is in the form of an obtuse angle.
  • Rounded: The apex of the leaf is completely rounded.
  • Truncated: When it is presented almost straight, as if it had been cut.
  • Retuse: The blade appears semi straight or notched with a very slight apex.
  • emarginated: The leaf has a small opening at the apex, but very light.

The base of tree leaves is that enlarged portion that joins the petiole with the stem. In some cases certain appendages of various shapes are found. The base is classified according to its shape as follows:

  • Acute: When the base of the leaf next to the petiole forms an acute angle.
  • Obtusa: The base of the blade forms an obtuse angle.
  • Acuminate: This base starts out as a perfect triangle.
  • dimmed: The blade decreases in width until it reaches the petiole.
  • Cuneate: In this the sides of the blade go straight to the petiole.

  • Auricular: Two small, less pronounced lobes are formed at the base of the leaf.
  • rounded: The lamina joins the petiole in a rounded way.
  • Truncated: The lamina joins the petiole almost straight.
  • Unequal: The junction of the lamina to the petiole is uneven but rounded.
  • Oblique: In this case the lamina joins the petiole with an irregular shape.

The margin or also known as the blade, represents the shape or appearance of the leaf blade, which makes each species of tree leaves unique and recognizable. The most common are:

  • Whole: In this case there is no element that makes the sheet different, since it is presented smoothly.
  • serrulated: It has closely followed beaks of tiny size resembling a serrated knife.
  • Sawn: It presents a kind of not very pronounced peaks.
  • Double Sawn: It is very similar to sawn but the peaks are more pronounced and there is a cavity between them.
  • Crenate: It is very similar to sawing but not in the form of a peak but in a slightly wavy way.
  • Lobed or Lobed: It has the shape of well-pronounced lobes, concavities outwards and convexities inwards.
  • Sinuous or scalloped: Margin attachment points form notch and concavities.
  • Curly: It presents outward concavities and inward convexities, but in a very sublime way.
