Gifts of the Holy Spirit
The word gift comes from the Greek charisma which means “something that is awarded without merit”. So it has to be understood that the gifts of the Holy Spirit they are a gift, they have nothing to do with my lifestyle, my sanctification or my actions. The Holy Spirit is the one who decides what gift to give you.
We receive these gifts of the Holy Spirit in our lives when we make the decision to allow Christ into our lives. How can we do this? First of all, we must confess that Jesus Christ is our God and Savior, humble ourselves on the Cross of Calvary. We must confess that we are sinners and that we cannot change without His help. Then we must begin our spiritual nourishment, which will consist of daily Bible reading. We must remain in prayer and begin to follow the path of the Lord Jesus.
Manifestations of the Holy Spirit
When we begin to read Paul's epistle, specifically in chapter (12) to the Church of Corinth, we will be able to see what the gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Bible which are classified into these three manifestations: gifts, ministries and operations.
1 Corinthians 12: 4-6
4 Now, there is a variety of women, but the Spirit is the same.
5 And there is diversity ministries, but the Lord is the same.
6 And there is diversity operations, but God, who makes all things in all, is the same.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are gifts that God gives us without asking for them, since Christ will equip us with every tool He needs to build His kingdom. These gifts will manifest as long as we as Christians decide to serve the Lord Jesus Christ.
When we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit there should be no reason to brag about these gifts from the Lord since they are a gift and not something that we deserve thanks to our condition as human beings.
Spirit Ministries
When Paul refers to the manifestations of ministries, he means the different ways human beings serve God. It can range from cleaning to preaching; the important thing is that when we begin to serve God, we do so with humility and a whole heart, ready to please Him.

The last manifestation Paul refers to in these verses is operations. When we analyze this word, we realize that operations comes from the Greek "enegema" to which energy refers. When we study the word energy, it is directly related to the operation of what moves the world.
In the spiritual world there are two energies: one is that of God, which is what makes us move and will always focus on moving us forward; the other is what gives us strength to continue on the Lord's path.
The second energy is satanic, which prevents human beings from achieving goals, placing obstacles in the way of God's call for each of us, forcing us to remain still.
Now, when we study the word operations from a biblical perspective, we realize that the Lord operates energetically on each of us, but this energy comes from Almighty God himself.
Purposes of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit
1 Corintios 4: 7
7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for profit.
The primary purpose of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is profit. The word profit comes fromsumpheron"which means for"the common good.” If we analyze this definition within the verse, we understand that the gifts the Holy Spirit gives us are to be shared with others.
Every blessing the Lord gives us is meant to be shared. We must understand that as Christians, we live not for ourselves but for others. Thanks to this, the Lord can build up his body in the Church.
The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit
As we already know, the Holy Spirit gives us gifts or presents that will be shown depending on the communion you have with the Lord, so to see these blessings in your life we must first accept Christ in our hearts and live in his commandments and then see each of the gifts he has sent us, which can be: wisdom, science, understanding, intelligence, counsel, strength, piety and fear of God.
Wisdom
The word "word" is defined as an expression or saying that can be described in a statement. On the other hand, the word "wisdom" in a spiritual context is known as the true fear of God.
If we put these two definitions together, we see that the gift of the word of wisdom refers to the description of the true fear of God, which means knowing in conscience what it is like to live without God the Father in our lives.
2 Corintios 1: 12
12 Because our glory is this: the testimony of our conscience, that with the simplicity and sincerity of God, not with human wisdom, but with the grace of God, we have conducted ourselves in the world, and much more with you.
Science
The word science is defined as the term that indicates knowledge. This refers to the understanding that we achieve on an intellectual, personal and emotional level.
If we combine this definition with the previous statement of the word, we have that the meaning of this gift is the description of the knowledge of what surrounds us.
1 Corinthians 13:8
8 Love never stops being; but prophecies will end, and tongues will cease, and science will end.
Understanding or Intelligence
When studying the word understanding we understand that it comes from the Latin "intelligent" which is made up of two words: "Inter" which refers to between and “legere” which translates to read, choose or select. When we join these two definitions that Latin gives us, we are left with the definition of understanding being the faculty of thinking.
The definition of intelligence has evolved over the years and with scientific advances; however, the overall definition of the word we are studying is the capacity for logic and comprehension of one or more subjects. It is also attributed to the ability to retain or deduce different types of information that will be applied in a specific environment.
Ephesians 1: 8
8 which he made to abound to us in all wisdom and understanding,
When we apply these definitions to a spiritual level, we understand that when God gives us this gift, He is giving us all the mental capacities to discern different topics, whether social, cultural, religious, scientific, or otherwise. Therefore, when we begin to listen to or study the Word of the Lord, it is advisable to ask for wisdom, understanding, and discernment to understand everything more clearly.
When we refer to the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we understand that God has given us the ability to study the Word of God, comprehend it, understand it, explain it, and preserve it in each of our hearts as Christians devoted to the Gospel.
1 Juan 5: 20
20 But we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding to know him who is true; and we are in the true, in the Son of him Jesus Christ of him. This is the true God, and eternal life.
Council
Counsel is a variety of recommendations or guidance that a person can receive. This is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which is related to other gifts such as wisdom, understanding, and knowledge.
We must remember that these gifts are gifts from the Lord, so it is understood that the advice that will come from the heart that has this gift will come from Christ's desires for the life of each of us.
2 Corintios 8: 10
10 And in this I give my advice; because this suits you, who started before, not only to do it, but also to want it, since last year.
Fortaleza
Fortresses have always been walled structures that were built to defend against enemy armies. The same definition applies to the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
When we accept the Holy Spirit into our lives, He will be our strength against the attacks the enemy sends us. We must always know and remember that spiritual battles are fought every day, so we will always need to be in communion with the Lord and emerge victorious from them.
Ephesians 3: 16
16 that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with power in the inner man by his Spirit;
Piety
The word piety is derived from the Latin word feet which when translated reads as devout. On the other hand, the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) defines piety as:
"The virtue that inspires, for the love of God, tender devotion to holy things"
So when we see piety as another of the seven (7) gifts of the Holy Spirit, we understand it as the love, respect, moderation and affection that should be felt for each of our neighbors.
2 Peter 1:3
3 As all things pertaining to life and godliness have been given to us by his divine power, through the knowledge of him who called us by his glory and excellence,
Fear of God
When we read the Bible, we realize that the Lord mentions four fears that human beings face. It is important to emphasize that as Christians, we cannot under any circumstances allow the following fears to enter our lives, as they come from sources that are not pleasing to the Lord. These fears are: the fear of man, the fear of circumstances, and the fear of Satan.
When we refer to the fear of man, it refers to the feelings we have toward unknown things, places, and people. When we talk about the fear of circumstances, we're talking about those things in life that cause us panic, such as death, earthquakes, illness, and others. Finally, the fear of Satan is the fear we can feel toward him and other demons.
The only positive fear that exists is the fear of God the Father, which is defined as the fear of being without Him. Losing sight of His presence in our lives and the bad things we know will happen to us if we stray from His path.
Other gifts of the Holy Spirit
These other gifts of the Holy Spirit are three dimensional. This means that they deal with the world, the church and with the believer. Analyzing in depth each dimension we find the following specifications.

When the Holy Spirit's purpose in dealing with the world is directly through his treatment of sin, he teaches us that sin exists, that the sinner will be judged, and that ultimately he will receive justice from God. He focuses on discernment of right and wrong.
Church gifts
For his part, the Holy Spirit, when dealing with his church, gives various types of gifts, which are classified as revelation, power, and inspiration.
revelation gifts
Revelation is defined as the content and process by which God makes himself known to people. The knowledge that we as human beings develop within the spiritual world is given by God.
The word revelation means to uncover what was previously unknown. God uses this gift so that every man and woman can know what their desires are and maintain divine community with God. The Lord's revelations are classified as general and special.
General revelations are those that can occur through nature, in our experience, in consciousness, or in history. God the Father reveals himself in the wonders he created, in heaven and on earth.
When we speak of the manifestations of conscience, we mean that the Lord reveals himself through the moral sentiment in the conscience of every man and woman. Finally, we have revelation in history; all the stories in the events of the world bear the revelation of the Lord.
Now, when we refer to special revelations, they arise from the entrance of sin into the world. The Lord had to change the way he revealed himself to his creation because of this action. The clearest and most marked difference between the two is that general revelation is available to all, while special revelation is only for certain people. Special revelation is also progressive, redemptive, and personal, since Christ understands our human condition.
- discernment of spirit
This gift refers to the ability that was given by God to understand if the message we are receiving comes from the Holy Spirit or from demons that impersonate Him.
Gifts of Power
Power can be defined in two ways: the first is the ability to act or create an effect, and the other is the authority one has over another person. For the gifts of the Holy Spirit, both definitions are accepted. The following are the gifts the Lord has given us:
- Faith:
When we analyze the word faith, we understand that it comes from the Greek “Koine"which represents confidence. It is also defined as a firm conviction. Faith, for Christians, is the trusting response we have in the face of the revelations of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- Health:
It is the work of God through instruments and ways He chooses to grant health to people who are sick, not only physically, but also mentally, spiritually, and emotionally.
- Miracles:
They are defined as those events that undoubtedly correspond to the powerful and divine intervention on the part of God.
- inspirational gifts
Inspiration is defined as the rapid impulse to inspire creativity in the search for solutions to various problems and ideas. The gifts that fall into this category are:
- Prophecies:
Prophecies are the reception and belief that God has given His word, through a direct request to the chosen person.
- Genres and interpretation of languages:
It is one of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, described in the Holy Scriptures as having three main functions: the first is to show the progression of the gift the Holy Spirit has given us as a gift from our God. Second, we share what is happening in the world, specifically the Gospel. Finally, it acts as a method of communication between people of different languages.
If we analyze the current context, we can rule out the last two functions, since the Gospel has spread throughout the world through the Bible, and communication bridges with other dialects have been built, so it does not represent an obstacle to understanding.
So we are left with the progression of the Holy Spirit in Christians. It's worth noting that not all Christians possess this gift, but that doesn't mean you're any less than those blessed with it.
believer's gifts
A believer is one who believes in God and in the sacrifice he made by sending his only Son to the Cross of Calvary for our salvation. Believers in this truth are known as Christians. The gifts of the Holy Spirit that fall within the classification of gifts are:
- Regeneration:
Regeneration is defined as the exclusive act of God in which we are completely passive. When we are restored through the Holy Spirit, our eyes are spiritually opened. This event occurs when we make the decision to live in Christ Jesus.
Spiritual regeneration is the leaven that human beings need to grow in our relationship with God the Father. When we are regenerated through the Lord's goodness, we understand that this change in our lives was necessary to achieve the enjoyment of a relationship with God.
It's important to clarify that regeneration is something the Lord gives you on a spiritual level. The Lord transforms your thinking and, therefore, the way you do things. It's worth noting that in Catholic traditions, regeneration is attributed to baptism, which is false. If we turn to the Holy Scriptures, we realize that baptism is a testimony that we have been regenerated, not a means to achieve this.
Ezequiel 36: 26
26 I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.
- Teaches:
The Holy Spirit is the one who shows us the path that Jesus wants us to follow as Christians, showing us what actions we should take at crucial moments to follow each of our Shepherd's footsteps.
Juan 14: 26
26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I have said to you.
- Remember:
The gift of remembrance that God the Father gives us through the Holy Spirit has the mission of reminding us of each sacrifice, biblical promises and oath that God has made us. It also serves to remind us of the obligations that we must fulfill as Christians that we are.
- Gives Security:
The Holy Spirit is the one who tells us that God protects each of us as believers. The Bible teaches us that security does not depend on human beings, but on the communion that exists between people and God.
If we as Christians do not heed the obligations the Lord indicates to us in the Bible, our relationship will gradually fall apart, and we will be left alone. This creates for those of us who have lived in the shadow of the Almighty a complete feeling of insecurity and instability, which can only be healed by the presence of our Lord Jesus.
- dwells in us:
The definition of abode is attributed to the terms house and home. So when we refer to the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, it means that He lives in each of our bodies.
The important thing about this gift is that each person who has believed in the resurrection confesses that Christ is their God and Savior, decides to accept and live respecting each of the commandments, and we walk His path, we become temples of God.
Ephesians 2: 20-22
20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, the cornerstone being Jesus Christ himself,
21 in whom the whole building, well coordinated, grows to be a holy temple in the Lord;
22 in whom you also are being built up together for a dwelling place for God in the Spirit.
- Sanctify
When the gift of the Holy Spirit is sanctification, we understand it as the process by which we become holy, resulting in a complete change in our lifestyle as believers. The word sanctification comes from the Greek root “hag”, which refers to holiness and consecration. Paul defines the process of sanctification in the New Testament as the process every Christian undergoes to be accepted and justified in the presence of God the Father.
Pedro 1 1: 2
2 chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father in sanctification of the Spirit, to obey and be sprinkled with the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace and peace be multiplied to you.
Fruits of the Holy Spirit
Just as the Holy Spirit gave us His gifts, He also gives each of us fruits. We must simply confess Christ as our God and Savior, live under His shadow, fulfill every one of His commandments, walk in His path, praise Him, and honor Him every day of our lives.
The fruits of the Holy Spirit are twelve: charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, longsuffering, modesty, love, and self-control. Each of these fruits will grow according to our communion with God the Father.
