The meaning of Ephesians 2:10

On this occasion we will develop the biblical verse of Ephesians 2:10, so that we learn about the meaning contained in these words of the apostle Paul.

Ephesians 2:10 (NIV): 10 For we are God’s handiwork , created in Christ Jesus to do good works , which God prepared in advance for us to do.

In these few words, Paul makes us see three great blessings that we receive from God through his Spirit, by being united together with Christ Jesus. God therefore wants us to be aware and to appropriate them to put them into practice, these blessings are:

  • We are God's workmanship: It means that we are the masterpiece created from the hands of God.
  • We were created in Christ Jesus: This blessing tells us that by receiving Christ we are new creatures, now created in Him.
  • God prearranged: This new birth was already before, prepared for us in God's purpose. So that together with Christ as a church we carry out the good works of God's perfect plan.

So God tells us that with his Holy Spirit, he has long established in his purpose, the most sacred union. From this union the church of Jesus Christ is born, which has the responsibility of reproducing the life of Christ, putting into practice the good works that God had already arranged in his perfect plan.

So God cannot leave the redeemed in the grave of eternal death. Those of us who are IN CHRIST and those who sleep in Him, live to wait to see Him come down from the heavens to look for us and take us along with Him.

for good deeds

The sacrifice that Jesus consummated on the cross is for us to receive through Him, God's wisdom, Salvation, Justification, Sanctification and Redemption. And even more so that we may be participants together with Christ in good works even greater than those he has already done.

Ephesians 2:10 What does it mean that we are God's workmanship?

Continuing with the verse of Ephesians 2:10, let us now see what is the meaning of the fact that we are God's workmanship. In this analysis it is convenient to know that the word workmanship in the Greek text is «poiéma» (G4161).

This Greek term has several connotations, among which are named: made, workmanship, to work, a thing made, a work, labor, what has been done. From the above, it could be defined then, what workmanship means: The work of God as creator.

The same Greek word poiema appears only once more in the Bible, specifically in the verse of Romans 1:20. In this verse, most biblical versions translate the Greek term as the created, the creation, what God made, what he created, the created things; only a few versions translate it in the same sense as Ephesians 2:10, example:

Romans 1:20 (JBS): For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, are clearly perceived, being understood from the creation of the world and from what has been made , so that there is no excuse;

Therefore, we are the work of God as creator; even in the New Living Translation of the Bible, in Ephesians 2:10 it says, "That we are God's masterpiece." But, the meaning is not only there, but that we were created for good works In Christ, so that we can reproduce in the world the character and love of God.

We are the work of God to be used by Him

In this sense, Romans 1:20 tells us that we are the things made to bear witness to the power of God, so that no one excuses himself and denies it. In this sense we bring up again the Greek word used by the apostle Paul to define us as the work of God, workmanship or poiéma. We are the molded clay, the work of art in the hands of the great craftsman who is God.

The value of this work of art made with this humble material of such low value is printed by our Lord Jesus Christ IN us and IN whom we were saved.

we were sealed

Ephesians 2:10 – God has prepared us beforehand for good works

All the sacred writing from the genesis teaches us that God from the creation has his perfect plan. A plan characterized by predestination and which has been fulfilled for ever and ever.

Under this Christian doctrine of predestination, God from eternity determined a purpose for each member of his creation. In this purpose he predestined some to eternal life and called others the sons of disobedience, who if they do not have a true repentance will be the object of the wrath of God (Colossians 3: 6).

Hebrews 9:15 (NBV): Therefore, Christ is the mediator of a new covenant. Through his death, those who are called will receive the promised eternal inheritance, and will be freed from the sins they have committed.

we were equipped

How to Apply Ephesians 2:10 in our lives

The first thing to know about how we should apply the meaning of Ephesians 2:10 in our lives is that we are also God's workmanship in Christ a member of his church. Each member of the church of Jesus Christ has a particular function given by God.
