The Teatro de Rojas in Toledo has unveiled the details of its upcoming autumn season, which will run from the end of September until January 2027 and will feature more than forty productions designed for all audiences. The presentation, held at the theater itself, was attended by the Councilor for Culture and Heritage, Ana Pérez, the theater's director, Paco Plaza, and two of the Toledo artists who will be part of the program: actress Lola Baldrich and musician Kike Calzada.
The new program maintains the Rojas's hallmark: an offering structured around five main sections that combine classical theater, dance, opera, family-friendly productions, and a selection of off-season performances. As those in charge emphasized during the event, the intention is to balance big names from the national and international scene with local talent, a philosophy that has become standard practice in the management of the municipal theater.
The Toledo Golden Age Classical Theatre Festival celebrates its 34th edition
One of the highlights of the season will once again be the Toledo Golden Age Classical Theatre Festival, now in its 34th edition. The festival will feature fifteen productions , combining stage shows, touring productions, and performances aimed at school groups. The series will kick off on October 3rd with *La libertad pretendo * (I Seek Freedom), a play written, performed, and directed by Toledo native Lola Baldrich, and will conclude in January with *Fuenteovejuna* , as part of the educational program.
Among the announced titles are * El lindo Don Diego *, *La dama boba* by Lope de Vega, * El retablo de las maravillas* with Albert Boadella's company, * La Gallarda* with Silvia Marsó, * Timon de Atenas* starring Pepe Viyuela, and several Shakespearean productions. A new addition to the program is the Literary Booths , three British-style telephone booths where the public can listen to poems by authors such as Machado, Lorca, Gloria Fuertes, and Emily Dickinson, as well as excerpts from *Don Quixote* and verses by Shakespeare.
Season tickets for the festival will be sold from September 10 to 16, while individual tickets will be available from the 17th. The full season ticket, which includes twelve shows, will cost 144 euros, while the two partial season tickets for six performances will cost 90 euros each.
The 20th International Dance Cycle celebrates its twentieth anniversary
Dance will take center stage with the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the International Dance Cycle, which will bring together eight performances by national and international companies. The program includes titles such as Carmen by the Antonio Gades Ballet , Creaviva by the Rafaela Carrasco Company (winner of the 2023 National Dance Prize), The Nutcracker and Swan Lake by the International Classical Ballet, and Romeo and Juliet by Worldwide Ballet Theatre, among others.
A full season ticket for all eight shows will cost €112, while partial season tickets for four performances will cost €68. Season tickets will go on sale from September 17 to 30, and individual tickets will be available from October 1. The theater management acknowledges that contemporary dance and flamenco still require more work to cultivate audiences , although the major classics in the repertoire continue to achieve occupancy rates close to 95%.
The Lyric Cycle recovers zarzuela as musical heritage
The operatic program will consist of four titles: La verbena de la Paloma , Madama Butterfly , Marina , and La tabernera del puerto . The season places special emphasis on zarzuela , a genre that the Rojas Theatre considers an essential part of Spain's musical heritage and which is currently undergoing a process of stage renewal. The theatre's director defended the need to promote zarzuela and move it away from a conception excessively tied to the past, advocating for new forms of production and staging.
The season ticket for all four performances will cost 80 euros and can be purchased from September 17 to 30. Individual tickets will be available from October 1. Paco Plaza emphasized that it is difficult to find a performance of this caliber for 20 or 22 euros , highlighting the excellent value for money offered by the program.
Theatre and Dance for Families and off-season shows
The family-oriented program will feature seven shows, including Sleeping Beauty , Magic Around the World , Triplette , The Gingerbread House , The Pirate Queen , Bon Voyage!, and Experiences . This last offering is specifically designed for babies over one year old and has become one of the most unique experiences, transforming the theater lobby into a space filled with families and strollers. A season pass for five shows will cost €30 and will be available from September 10 to 23, while individual tickets will go on sale on the 24th.
Outside of the regular series, the season will include theatrical productions such as *Poncia* with Lolita Flores, * Dos familias *, *Gigante* , and *Esencia* , directed by Eduardo Vasco and starring Juan Echanove and Joaquín Climent. In the music section, the traditional Christmas and New Year's concerts will return , along with performances by Kiko Veneno and Spark The Classical Band, a German ensemble featuring Toledo-born cellist Isabel García. Local talent will be prominently featured with performances by Kike Calzada, who will present his latest album, *La pedida* , accompanied by his band, and singer-songwriter Carlos Ávila with * Quien la probó lo sabe *.
The official season opening will take place on September 27th with the Teatro de Rojas Awards ceremony, featuring Yllana as the central theme. Special recognitions include the Teatro Miguel de Cervantes (local) , the Villacañas Amateur Theatre Festival (provincial), the Radio Nacional de España program "La Sala" (national), and the New York Circle Theatre (international). Audience votes will recognize, among others, Malena Alterio for Best Actress, Pepón Nieto for Best Actor, and Andrés Lima for directing " La comedia de los errores" (The Comedy of Errors ).
Last season, the venues managed by the Teatro de Rojas—the main hall, the small hall, the Greco Theatre-Auditorium, and the Thalía Hall—registered an average occupancy rate of nearly 80%, with an increase in audience numbers of between 5% and 7% compared to 2024, representing approximately 6.000 more spectators. Classical theatre continues to be the most popular program and sells out its season tickets the fastest, followed by family programming. With this new season, the Rojas aims to continue expanding and building a loyal audience, consolidating Toledo as a hub for culture and the performing arts.
