This prayer appeared as a poem called A Beautiful Prayer, which was raised in a mass in 1912. Pope Benedict XV asked that it be published in Italian to be read in them, it was published in the newspaper L ´Osservatore Romano in January 1916. But it had already been made public in 1915 in the middle of the First World War, the sentence seems to have been written by the Marquis de la Rochethulon et Grente, but later it was clarified that it was not of this, but of Souvenir Normand.
It was attributed to Saint Francis of Assisi in 1926, on the 700th anniversary of the saint's death, and it was adapted to his personality. Christian Renoux was the one who sought to demonstrate the origin of this prayer in recent years, since 1998. He was a member of the French School of Rome, holds a PhD in Modern History from the University of Paris, and a degree in Theology from the University of Strasbourg. It is due to him that the prayer was given the name Franciscan Prayer for Peace, not attributing its authorship to Saint Francis, but reflecting the spirit of the Franciscan congregation.
