History of the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre
In the writings found in the buildings of the Archivo General de las Indias, in Seville, Spain, it is said that between 1612 and 1613, the image of the Virgin was found in the sea, specifically in the Bay of Nipe, located on the north coast of the eastern region of Cuba by three slaves, a black boy named Juan Moreno and two indigenous brothers named Juan and Rodrigo de Hoyos, when they were looking for salt.
While they were in their small boat in the middle of a big storm, they thought they would sink, but suddenly the sea calmed down and they saw a floating board with an image approaching them, and when they rescued it, they realized that the figure was of a woman carrying a child in her arms and who had written the phrase: «I am the Virgin of Charity».
With the passing of the years and when this beautiful story became known, these young people began to be identified as "the three Juanes". In addition, this discovery was so relevant that seventy-five years later the church was interested in collecting in a document under ecclesiastical oath the testimony of the old slave Juan Moreno, in which he recounted all the details of that glorious day in which the Virgin of Charity allowed them to find her image.
In the same facilities of the Archives of the Indies, where, as previously mentioned, the text that contains the history of the three Juanes and the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre is found, another book is also kept that recounts the arrival on three May 1597 to the Sierra del Cobre mines in Cuba, from the statue of the Virgen de la Caridad, patron saint of several Spanish cities.
Precisely from the city of Illesca, Spain, was the artillery captain Francisco Sánchez de Moya, who was the one who took the aforementioned sacred image, when he was on a mission to defend those Cuban coasts from the attacks of English pirates, and had to fulfill the order of King Felipe II to build a small church, so that the soldiers and miners could offer their prayers to the Virgin.
Proclamation and Coronation
Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre, thanks to the request of the veterans of the War of Independence, was proclaimed in 1916 as the patron saint of Cuba by Pope Benedict XV, establishing that her commemoration should take place every September 8.
Years later, in 1936, Pope Pius XI highlighted this Marian devotion with the imposition of the crown. This canonical coronation was carried out by the bishop of Santiago de Cuba, Monsignor Valentín Zubizarreta. Later, on January 24, 1998, the sacred image was crowned as queen and patron of that Caribbean country by Pope John Paul II.
Already in the twentieth century, two other top officials of the Catholic Church also traveled to the island of Cuba to honor the Virgin, giving Pope Benedict XVI the opportunity on March 26, 2012, when she was decorated with the Golden Rose of Christianity, on the occasion of celebrating the four hundredth anniversary of the appearance of the image. Then in the following three years, in 2015, Pope Francis, on the occasion of the commemoration of the centenary of the consecration of Cuba to the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, decreed the Exceptional Holy Year of Mercy.
Devotion
During the Cuban wars of independence that began in 1868, the troops of the Liberation Army showed great admiration for the Virgin of Charity and begged them with great faith to protect them at all times from the dangers they faced in those armed struggles that they were carrying around their country.
Nowadays, the faithful devotees who visit the Sanctuary usually return home with small stones where the copper from the mine shines, which are placed in glasses of water or carried in their pockets or purses as amulets of protection. against evil.
Copper Sanctuary
There is a very interesting story that says that initially a chapel was built for the Virgin with boards and the traditional guano leaves, but according to the inhabitants of the time, the image mysteriously disappeared on several occasions, so they relocated it to the altar. of the parish church, but with the surprise that the mysterious disappearances were also repeated there.
Until one day when observing some lights on the top of a hill near the copper mines, they decided that this was the place where Cachita wanted her religious temple to be built. Some time later, the first sanctuary of it collapsed in 1906, due to the impact of the constant explosions and mining excavations. Later, the current National Copper Sanctuary was built, which was inaugurated on September 8, 1927, inside which there is a solid silver altar and other very valuable ornaments.
This sacred site is located in El Cobre, a municipality in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, it has three naves with a symmetrical main façade, a central structure that ends in a dome and the lateral naves are adorned by towers where the bell tower dominate at a lower level.
In the place where the Virgin is, there is the so-called miraculous chapel, a small enclosure where believers deposit their offerings, such as: gold jewelry and precious stones, crutches, among other valuables.
Later, this National Sanctuary of Copper was proclaimed a Minor Basilica on December 22, 1977 by Pope Paul VI, who then sent Cardinal Bernardin Gantin to Cuba to be the bearer of the Papal Bull, that is, of the authenticated document with the seal of the Pope on this religious act.
The Basilica Sanctuary of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre is one of the places of greatest Cuban worship, where believers frequently attend to get the spiritual support of their beloved patron saint and the solution of their problems.

In the place of the mines of Santiago de Prado, on the first day of April of the year 1687, the Beneficiary Mr. Juan Ortíz Montejo de la Cámara, Rector Curator of the Parish of this place, Judge Commissioner, by Mr. Don Roque de Castro Machado, Provisional Official Judge and Vicar General of the City of Cuba and its District, in charge of the temporal and spiritual government of this Bishopric.
Gathered to record the apparitions and miracles of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God and Our Lady of Charity, Juan Moreno, from whom God received an oath and a cross, made it appear that he did so in accordance with the law, He promised to tell the truth of what he knows.
When asked about his personal data, he replied that his name was Juan Moreno, that he was a black slave, a native of that place, and that he was eighty-five years old. They then asked him to explain the details of what he knew about the apparition of Our Lady Caridad y Remedios.
To which he told them that the ten-year-old was looking for salt in the Bay of Nipe, which was located in the northern band of this Island of Cuba, and that being in the company of Rodrigo de Hoyos and Juan de Hoyos, who were two natural Indian brothers, with whom he went to look for salt and having taken refuge in Cayo Francés which is in the middle of said Bay of Nipe to go to the salt mine in good weather.
But when the sea was calm one morning, those who would later be known as the three Juanes left before sunrise. He continued explaining that being in the canoe and away from said Cayo Francés.
They saw a white thing floating on a small board on the foam of the water and they did not know what it could be, and when it got closer to them they first thought it looked like a bird or dry branches, even the Hoyo Indians said it looked like a girl .
Then when they rescued her they recognized her as Our Lady the Blessed Virgin, with a baby Jesus on her arm. In addition, Juan Moreno said that some large letters could be seen on said board and that when the young Rodrigo de Hoyos read them he said: 'I am the Virgin of Charity', he also highlighted the surprise that they were caused by the fact that the vestments of this picture were not wet.
After this great discovery, the three young men returned to the Hato de Barajagua very happy, upon arrival they told what had happened to the manager Miguel Galán, who was also moved, and immediately sent Antonio Angola to bring the good news to Captain Don Francisco Sánchez de Moya, to decide what had to be done.
Meanwhile, the Virgin was placed on a beautiful and very simple wooden altar prepared for her, with a lit lamp. When the aforementioned captain learned of this marvelous apparition of the Virgin, he ordered that a shrine be built to Our Lady of Charity and that it be kept lit with a copper lamp.
In this place of veneration made with guano palms and boards, very strange things happened, since the old Juan Moreno recounted that several nights when the Indian Rodrigo de Hoyos was very aware that the lamp was on.
He realized that sometimes the image was not on his altar, but that it appeared the next day with wet clothes, this caused him great concern, so he immediately informed the mayoral and other people of the place of what was happening. .
Captain Sánchez de Moya also learned of this strange situation, and upon receiving this new news, he entrusted Father Bonilla, a religious from San Francisco, to go to the Hato accompanied by many people, to take the Blessed Mother in procession and the placed on an altar in the Parish Church of this place, until its own sanctuary was ready with the favor of the Holy Spirit.
Then, as a manifestation of joy, a sung mass and sermon were celebrated, they prayed that soon the beloved Virgin would have her own church to receive her devotees at the top of the hill they call the quarry, and that was the place she chose. previously by sending signals of lights that appeared and disappeared.
Another of the questions they asked Juan Moreno was about the miracles of the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, since she had her church on the hill of the mine to the faithful who call her to ask for her divine favors, which he replied that there were quite a few since it appeared and was placed on his modest altar.
Especially, he told how he saved the life of brother Mathias de Olivera, when he fell down an abysmal mine and in all this terrible moment he always called the Blessed Virgin of Charity, and such was the surprise that he found a Magüey bush , of which he held on tightly and began to scream for them to get him out of there.
And suddenly some local workers heard him and helped him by throwing some ropes at him, which he held on to get out. After he was saved, this good man told the people that thanks to divine providence he was able to stay alive on that branch.
He also spoke of the miracle of the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, related to the healing of serious ailments of people who used the oil from the lamp that lit his altar.
Which became a popular belief as a result of what Brother Mathias de Olivera said, in that sometimes the lamp was about to go out because they had no oil to put in it, and when they checked it again it appeared full, so that stayed on for several days without any explanation.
Juan Moreno also said that he had heard the miracle of the Virgin when during an unbearable drought, the villagers had to walk many leagues to get water, the Virgin with her infinite goodness had heard the pleas they made to her.
Especially when they took her down to the Parish Church to take a tour of the place, and at that moment there were a lot of winds and it started to rain so much that they took her back to her church and in an instant the river rose and the drought ended.
Given the many miracles he has performed, as the oil in his lamp is used to cure illnesses. And following the death of Brother Mathias de Olivera, Brother Melchor de los Remedios, who always invoked Our Lady of Charity and Remedies, joined the group.

Pilgrimage in 2011
On the occasion of the anniversary festivities for the four hundred years since the discovery of the image of the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Cuba (COCC), decided to declare the Marian Jubilee Year 2012, a year of celebration for the entire Catholic Church in Cuba.
For this reason, they organized a religious tour throughout the country carrying the image called "La Mambisa," which is kept in the parish of Santo Tomás, in the Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba, and which is especially important for representing the Cubans who fought against Spanish colonialism.
The pilgrimage began on August 8, 2010 with a journey through the east and moved west, mounted on a van equipped for this purpose, led by José Armando García Fernández, known as "the driver of the Virgin", for 29.978 kilometers, managing to bring the message of happiness for this celebration to cities, towns, villages, schools, hospitals, military units, prisons, maternity homes, chapels, convents, among other places.
On July 17, 2011, the image of the Holy Virgin was first presented in the Diocese of Matanzas and then in the Archdiocese of Havana, where many devotees celebrated in the community of Niña Sierra.
From there, she briefly visited El Limite, Entronque and Matadero until she was taken to the city of Madruga, where Monsignor Juan de Dios Hernández officially delivered the image and a stole to Cardinal Jaime Ortega Alamino, Archbishop of Havana. The stole accompanied all the shepherds during the tour of the image and passed from one to another until the last celebration.
A few months later, on the day her commemoration is celebrated in Cuba, the image was in an important town, where she later visited different cities in the country.
On September 18, hundreds of parishioners took her on a “Río Júcaro” catamaran to the Isle of Youth where they received her in the port of Gerona, then dedicated extraordinary religious days of veneration to her. The Blessed Mother continued her journey through the southern part of the Archdiocese of Havana. In the end, she was handed over by Cardinal Ortega to Monsignor Jorge Enrique Serpa, Bishop of Pinar del Río, on October 2 in El Blanquizal.
The weekly "El artemiseño" reviewed both his arrival in the area and the participation of the local concert band in his reception. On October 3 he continued to the parish of Artemisa where he spent two days. Then she was received in Candelaria, touring Cayajabos, Soroa and Las Terrazas. He continued his pilgrimage in the towns of Guane, Mantua, Minas and Santa Lucía. In all these places she was received with great joy by her faithful, especially by the prisoners and a religious who, due to particular circumstances, could not be present in the squares where honors were paid to the Blessed Mother.
While on the 30th, the Eucharist was celebrated at the Provincial Captain San Luis Stadium, where the image was raised by six of the best baseball players in the province. The mass was celebrated by the Bishop of Pinar del Río, Bishop Emeritus Monsignor José Siro and Monsignors Jorge E. Serpa, Bruno Musaró, Papal nuncio in Cuba, Juan de Dios Hernández, among others.
Subsequently, this Marian representation led to the parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Viñales, visiting Puerto Esperanza and San Cayetano, to finally reach La Palma and Bahía Honda for this month.
Already for the month of November 2011, an extensive tour of the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre was also carried out, this time, the image of the diocese of Pinar del Río in the city of Menelao Mora was used, visiting the facilities of the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) and the "Pedro Kourí" Tropical Medical Institute, where the Sisters of Charity care for HIV patients.
Just one month after completing her tour of the country, a pre-dawn mass was held to celebrate her farewell from the municipality of Arroyo and she was later received with a Eucharist in the municipality of Marianao.
From there it continued in procession to the neighborhood of Pogolotti, after the parish of Jesús del Monte, it departed for the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Church of San Pablo, known as “Los Pasionistas”.
From there it was transferred to a house of Teresian nuns in the neighborhood of Lawton, being visited by thousands of people, then it was delivered to the nearby Community of Santa Lucía, days later it visited the hospital of San Juan de Dios, la Milagrosa, San Juan Bosco, in addition, from the Cardiovascular and Oncological-Neurological hospitals.
In the last month of the pilgrimage, the image of the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre arrived at the Convent of San Juan de Letrán, from where it was transferred to the Calixto García Íñiguez University Hospital, and then to the stairs of the University of Havana, being received by a multitude of university students and professors, she also visited the headquarters of the National Ballet of Cuba.
During December 6, 7 and 8, the image of the Virgin Mambisa remained in the Minor Basilica of the Virgen de la Caridad de Cobre, in the municipality of Centro Habana. He then visited the Joaquín Albarrán Surgical Clinical Hospital and various detention centers, the community of Tapaste, El Cacahual, the place where the remains of Lieutenant General Antonio de la Caridad Maceo y Grajales and his assistant Panchito Gómez Toro, son of Generalissimo Máximo Gómez Báez, rest.
Similarly, the Rincón Sanctuary with its leper colony was included in the tour; the Wajay, the Plaza José Martí and other sites. On December 30, 2011, with a solemn and massive celebration on Avenida del Puerto, the pilgrimage was completed. Religious syncretism
