Biography and life of Blessed Cayetano Catanoso
Cayetano Catanoso was born on August 13, 1879 in San Severino Lucano, province of Matera, in the region of Basilicata, in southern Italy. He was the second son of a humble and religious family. At the age of ten, Cayetano lost his mother and was raised by his paternal grandmother. At fifteen, he entered the diocesan seminary of Matera. He was ordained a priest on March 19, 1904.
After his ordination, Father Catanoso was sent to Rome to study moral theology and canon law. He returned to Matera in 1909 and was assigned as chaplain to the Provincial Hospital. In 1912, he was appointed rector of the Diocesan Seminary. During his tenure as rector, Father Catanoso did everything possible to improve the conditions of the seminary and attract more students.
In 1917, Father Catanoso was appointed vicar general of the diocese by Bishop Giovanni Cagliero. In this role, he worked tirelessly to improve the economic and social conditions of the poor and marginalized people of the diocese. He also founded an orphanage for orphaned children and a home for the abandoned elderly.
In 1922, Father Catanoso was appointed auxiliary bishop of Matera by Pope Benedict XV. As auxiliary bishop, he worked closely with Bishop Giovanni Cagliero to improve the economic and social conditions of the Italian people after World War I. In 1925, he helped found the Redemptorist Missionary Congregation Padre Pio da Pietrelcina (Pious Redemptorist Fathers) in Muro Lucano, Province of Potenza. The congregation was dedicated to bringing the Gospel to the most remote and inaccessible places in the world.
Father Gaetano died suddenly on December 8, 1926, in Muro Lucano, due to a heart attack while celebrating Mass. He was 47 years old. His body was buried in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Matera.
